Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Boston, New Hampshire Our work possesses some features of originality. That it has imperfections, we frankly admit but our aim has been to make it readable and truthful. Errors in date will undoubtedly appear, for they are unavoidable in a work of this kind. It has cost us much labor; but it has been bestowed without hope of praise, or expectation of reward; to us it has been a labor of love. Amid unusual parochial duties, the preparation of this work has proved too much for our strength, and quite incapacitated us for physical or intellectual effort for the last three months; and this must be some apology for some defects that may appear in the work. The embellishments in our work have been furnished at our earnest solicitations while some, through modesty, have with great reluctance allowed their portraits to appear; but our aim has been to obtain representatives of the dead and the living for the benefit of the future the same has been 'true in regard to Views of residences. The expense of embellishments has been borne bv those who furnished them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boston and the Parker House: A Chronicle of Those Who Have Lived on That Historic Spot Where the New Parker House Now Stands in Boston It well may occur that other grievous errors can be found in the pages of this chronicle. If so, please ac cept my apology now. The material from which it has been drawn is largely to be found in the original records of the several Registries of Deeds and Probate in and near Boston, and such historical matter as is set-forth had its source for the most part in the pages of The Memorial History of Boston, edited by Justin Winsor and published in 1880, a work of four volumes alto gether comprising over twenty-five hundred pages of printed matter. Many other books, pamphlets and newspapers have been read and no statement of fact is set forth herein which the author has any reason to doubt is true. Book History and Description of New England

Download or read book History and Description of New England written by Austin Jacobs Coolidge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Description of New England: Vermont The first volume of the History and Description of New England, embracing the States of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, has already been issued from the press. In bringing out the present volume, relating to Vermont alone, the authors would by no means underrate the importance of presenting the work, as far as possible, in its most compact form, that the mutual relation and dependence, each upon the other, of the several States, and the strong ties of brotherhood between their respective citizens, may be better understood and more sensibly felt by turning the leaves of their history and gathering evidence of their material prosperity from one and the same volume. But they can perceive no good reason why the desires of many who either prefer the whole work in separate States, or can only afford to present themselves with the volume treating of their own State, should not be gratified in the amplest manner. To the matter contained in the larger volume, has been added a list of the sons of Vermont, resident in Boston and vicinity, with their various occupations, and their places of residence or business, which much enhances the value of the work among business men, especially to those engaged in trade. It also contains biographical notices of distinguished and useful men, and much other information of that practical character which it is believed will enable it to demand and receive the public approval. Vermont asks no more of her sons, at home or abroad, than that they should be true to the inspiration of their native hills in indus try, practical economy, benevolence, patriotism, and filial piety; or to use more comprehensive terms - ia religion and common sense. Download or read book In and About Historic Boston Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In and About Historic Boston The military expeditions which marked Colonial New England as the land of an aggressive people received their inspiration in Boston, and recruited their strength largely from the sturdy citizens of Massachusetts Colony. It was in this section that the spirit of resistance to British tyranny found vent in action, rather than in words only. In Faneuil Hall, the Cradle of Liberty, the new spirit was truly nurtured and the city is fortunate in having preserved so much that is associated with the stirring times of the Tea Party, Bunker Hill, Paul Revere, and the famous Siege which ended when Washington fortified Dorchester Heights. The surrounding country is also rich in historical associations. To the south is Plymouth, where the Pilgrims landed in 1620, and Duxbury, the home of Standish; to the west are Lexington and Concord, where the first blood of the Revolution was shed, and the shot fired which was heard round the world; to the east are the historic towns of Lynn, Salem and Marblehead, where stirring scenes were enacted in pre-revolutionary times, and where the new has not been permitted to entirely obliterate the memories of the past.
