Book The History of Nero Annotated

Download or read book The History of Nero Annotated written by Jacob Abbott and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-19 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violent, bloody, and incredible story of Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (37-68 AD), who was Roman Emperor from 54 to 68, forms the basis of this highly readable and compelling work by master storyteller and popular historian Jacob Abbott. Beginning with the previous emperors Caligula and Claudius, Abbott lays the groundwork for Nero's early years and family background. Nero was adopted by his great-uncle Claudius to become his heir and successor, and succeeded to the throne after Claudius's death. The author is careful to make sure that all the details he provides are accurate and sourced-and then presents to the reader a whirlwind of drama, intrigue, amazing extravagance, and ultimately, madness, centered around the highest office in the Roman Empire. As Nero's personal behavior became more and more erratic, he accumulated endless enemies at home. This resulted in assassination conspiracies-all of them unsuccessful, but increasingly desperate and causing a spiral of retaliation and cruelty. Finally, in 68, the rebellion of Vindex in Gaul, and later the acclamation of Galba in Hispania, drove Nero from the throne. Threatened with death by execution, Nero committed suicide, finally ending the Julio-Claudian Dynasty."In writing the series of historical narratives to which the present work pertains, it has been the object of the author to furnish to the reading community of this country an accurate and faithful account of the lives and actions of the several personages that are made successively the subjects of the volumes, following precisely the story which has come down to us from ancient times. The writer has spared no pains to gain access in all cases to the original sources of information, and has confined himself strictly to them.

Book History of Nero

Download or read book History of Nero written by Jacob Abbott and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abraham Lincoln raved that this series of historical biographies gave him "just that knowledge of past men and events which I need. I have read them with the greatest interest. To them I am indebted for about all the historical knowledge I have." Considered what we would now call "young adult" literature, this collection, first published between 1848 and 1871, was designed to present a clear, distinct, connected narrative of the lives of the great figures of world history, those people who have been most influential, at least as American author and educator JACOB ABBOTT (1803-1879) saw it from his 19th-century perspective. Wildly popular and republished many times under different collected names, this replica set mimics the 1904 reprint known as the "Makers of History" series. It will delight students of history as well as show the scholar how history telling has changed over the last few centuries. More than 30 other volumes in the series are also available from Cosimo Classics. This volume, dating from 1853, covers Roman emperor Nero (37-68), from the assassination of Caligula, which led to his ascension to the throne, to the depravity and conspiracy that characterized his reign, and much more.

In him Nature seems to have done her worst, and conspired with Fate to place her product on an eminence so exalted that all men might see how great a monster she was capable of engendering. Born of a mother, of whom only such a son was worthy, he ran the gamut of every human crime and folly, making the Roman Empire minister to his atrocities, and, cheating venge ance at the end, died lamenting that so splendid a genius should have to pass away. Book excerpt: The reign of Nero is often judged to be the embodiment of the extravagance and the corruption that have, for many, come to symbolise ancient Rome. David Shotter provides a reassessment of this view in this accessible introduction to Nero, emperor of Rome from 54 to 68 AD. All the major issues are discussed including: • Nero’s early life and accession to power • Nero’s perception of himself • Nero’s domestic and international policies • the reasons for Nero’s fall from power and its aftermath. This new edition has been revised throughout to take account of recent research in the field.
