There are gaps in the narration. Also some portions receive too extended consideration in proportion to the space bestowed on other topics of equal or perhaps greater importance. Again the authority for many statements is either inadequately stated or is omitted altogether. Every canon dear to the heart of the historical scholar of today has been either broken or ignored. In short, there is no fault herein that the author does not recognize and acknowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of Michigan Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Michigan The twofold phase of our government, state and federal, is familiar to us all. The desirability of a knowledge of the principles and institutions of state concern, as distinguished from those of a national character, is now quite generally admitted. Indeed, it is thought that a familiarity with the institutions common to our townships, counties, and the state, should precede the study of the more distant and complex institutions of the general government. It is like wise generally believed that in the study of history the analogy holds true, and that the youth, before he is required to learn and comprehend the great national and world wide movements of history, should be told the story of his own state. One of the essential equipments for good citizenship is a knowledge of that noble band of men and women who, as pioneers, felled the forests, made the homesteads, organ ized the townships and the counties, and laid the foundations of the commonwealth. With a thorough knowledge of the history of the state and the principles of its government, the youth is at least equipped to discharge intelligently those civic duties with which he is most intimately connected, while a desire for a knowledge of history and government in their higher and broader relations is also fostered. It is to fulfill this mission in Michigan that this little book has been prepared. It is dedicated to the boys and girls of Michigan, as it was inspired by the belief that their lives would reflect a higher standard of civic virtue if lived with an intimate acquaintance with those patriots and statesmen whose efforts have made for the state an honorable fame. Book The Early History of Michigan From the First Settlement to 1815 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of Michigan, From the First Settlement to 1815 Three years since, while editing a literary periodical in Detroit, I commenced the publication of such facts as I could obtain concerning the early history of Michigan. Hon. Lewis Cass becoming interested in them, generously presented me with a large collection of manuscripts, containing official and narrative letters relating to the early French settlement, which he procured from the Colonial Archives at Paris, during his residence there as Minister Plenipotentiary. On examination of these papers, I found them interesting and valuable, furnishing many links in the broken chain of the early history of the Northwest. Encouraged by the commendation and proffered assistance of Rev. H. D. Kitchel, Capt. E. B. Ward, Rev. O. C. Thompson, and Messrs. U. Tracy Howe, George F. Porter, Henry Hurlbut, and Robert E. Roberts, of Detroit, I undertook the task of translating and compiling the manuscripts, hoping thereby to be of some service to the American reader, and especially to the inhabitants of Michigan and other portions of the great Northwest. In this translation I was assisted by a native Parisian, and by an accomplished French scholar from Boston, Mass. The translation was made with the greatest possible care, every sentence being revised and compared with the original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Michigan: Its History and Government Up to the present time, no thorough and adequate history of Michigan has been written and very much material now comparatively easily accessible, has never been given careful and thorough consideration. This fact has increased very greatly the difficulty of prepar ing these few chapters. They represent, in spite of their brevity, a great amount of time and labor, as I have examined, with such care as time has permitted, all material to which I could gain access. Another point that perhaps needs some explanation is the character of the work on the government of the state. I never have valued highly the ordinary work on Civil Government in our public schools. The com mitting to memory of the mere facts of government, without any understanding of the principles that under lie them or any knowledge of the processes through which they have come about, has not seemed to me a more valuable school exercise than the committing of any other comparatively unrelated facts. That such facts have practical value is largely a mistaken notion, and even if they have, most of the time spent upon them is waste time, because without any of our pedagogic efforts the average boy, by the time he is grown up, will know about everything that he ought to know of what the ordinary Civil Governments contain. The minutiae of Civil Government one learns from experience, so far as one needs to learn and remember them. In fact he must do so, if he learns them at all, for the details ofgovernmental affairs are constantly changing, and facts of this kind learned twenty-five years ago would now be so inaccurate as to be useless. But there are many questions which people cannot answer for themselves, many things that they will not of themselves be able to understand. In the average community, for example, or among ordinarily well educated people, how many have any proper conception of the relation of the state and the nation? Or of the source of authority of a state government? Or of the difference in position with regard to its powers between the state and the national government? And dozens of other things of this kind. Great principles underlie all English and American political development, which it has taken the slow process of ages to unfold and make articulate in existing institutions. It is in the under standing of these principles and of their processes of development, rather than in the everyday details, that the field of Civil Government properly lies. It should be a science starting from its fundamental principles, as does chemistry or any other properly developed science, but taking more careful account of the historical proc esses involved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Michigan, Vol. 3: Illustrated Mr. Johnson's education was acquired in the public schools of New York, and his business career began in 1865, at the age of eighteen. He was employed in the counting room Of a large New York tobacco manu factory until 1871, and that experience was followed by his connection with a large toy manufacturing concern in New York. In 1873 he was given an interest in the latter business and continued with the house until 1877. Failing health terminated his career as a toy manufacturer in New York city. Otherwise he might probably have continued in business in the eastern metropolis throughout his active years; For recuperation he went to Denver, Colorado, where he lived several years. In 1879 he began manufacturing and handling toys and kindred lines of goods in Denver, where his enterprise continued 011 a modest scale until 1884. In that year he located in Detroit, which has since been his permanent home. In Detroit Mr. Johnson became manager of the Detroit Knitting and Corset Works, and directed the business management of. That concern until 1887. In the meantime, in 1886, Mr. Johnson had become associated with Homer Pennock and William Penberthy, three men who organized and incorporated the Penberthy Injector Company for the purpose of manufacturing an improved form of steam injector invented by Mr. Pen berthy. Of the new company Mr. Johnson became secretary and treas urer. The Penberthy injector was by all odds superior to anything at the time in use, but the three associates had only moderate capital, and they proceeded cautiously with investment in plant and machinery, but exploited the sale and distribution of the product most vigorously. In a few years the Penberthy Injector had an established reputation as a mechanical appliance, and the factory at Detroit grew in proportion. Since that time it has become the largest concern of its kind in the world, and supplies all markets with the Penberthy Injector and other steam appliances. Its plant at Detroit occupies several acres of ground, with a large branch situated at Windsor, Canada. For fifteen years Mr. Johnson was presi dent and general manager of the plant and company, and to his manage ment during that period has been due much of the success of the enter prise. His son, Homer S. Johnson, who succeeded him as manager, has continued in that position ever since with wonderful success. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General History of the State of Michigan; With Biographical Sketches, Portrait Engravings, and Numerous Illustrations: A Complete History of the Peninsular State From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time Some one has very properly written that the country is already overloaded with histories of itself; and the same writer as properly adds Not one of them pretends to constitute a general history of the United States in volumes, embracing a complete history of each State separately - a work that would be of incalculable value to the archives of every Commonwealth of the American Repub lic. It has been offered in reply to this, that the early history of the United States is so consolidated and intermingled as not to admit of being divided into volumes that would adapt themselves respectively to each State. The last argument holds good only in so far as the task of compiling such a work is a difficult one, involving much labor that can scarcely hope for just compensa tion. The work presented in this volume is threefold in its character, embracing a general history of Michigan, from its earliest settlement to the present time (unincumbered by the records of a neighboring Commonwealth), including illustrations and brief descriptive sketches of the most prominent features of the Peninsular State, with portraits and short biographical sketches of its present leading business and professional men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Michigan Was New The first inhabitants of the Borderland region of whom we have any certain knowledge, were the American Indians. Where they came from is a mystery. They were here when the new world was discovered. The beau tiful waters of the lakes and the rivers were their high ways, over which they glided in their frail canoes. The great forests were their hunting grounds, where they followed the zig-zag trails, in search of shy bird and beast to Satisfy their hunger. From the carefully preserved records of the earliest pioneer missionaries and explorers, we learn many very interesting facts concerning them. These Visitors found them living in their wigwams and lodges of skin and bark. Their homes were rude in design and construction, yet they satisfied the simple necessities of a primitive people. The wigwams were small, while the lodges were large and roomy, well lined and carpeted with fur rugs and rush mats.
