Download or read book University of Denver written by Steve Fisher and Thyria Wilson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Denver (DU) was founded as the Colorado Seminary, in 1864, twelve years before Colorado became a state. For over 150 years, DU has been a part of the Denver community, providing educational opportunities for men, women, professionals, and the working community. The original campus in frontier Denver eventually moved to a treeless prairie donated by Rufus "Potato" Clark. The move was partially motivated by the fear that the saloons and other distractions of Denver were not conducive to study. In 1982, the institution incorporated Colorado Women's College, and the site became the Park Hill Campus with the law and music schools. DU's concerted efforts to provide its students, and the wider region, with a first-class education are made evident by the tales of resiliency told by faculty, staff, and students as the school overcame brushes with bankruptcy and countless other internal and external threats.

Book 2015 U S Higher Education Faculty Awards Vol 1

Download or read book 2015 U S Higher Education Faculty Awards Vol 1 written by Faculty Awards and published by River Publishers. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FacultyAwards.org is the first and only university awards program in the United States based on faculty peer evaluation. Faculty Awards was created to recognize outstanding faculty members (as viewed by their Faculty peers) at colleges and universities across the United States. Faculty members voted through the 2014-2015 academic year for their peers at their academic departments and schools within a number of categories. Access to FacultyAwards.org to nominate and vote for Faculty was limited to university professors or faculty members at accredited U.S. institution of higher education. Faculty members were nominated and voted for by other faculty members in their own academic departments and schools. We strove to maintain an accurate peer-review process. Voting was not open to students or the public at large. In addition, faculty members voted for educators only at their own college or university. Winners for the 2014-2015 academic year, in all departments and colleges across U.S. institutions of higher education were announced in March 2015 and are permanently archived at FacultyAwards.org, as well as recognized in this 2015 print edition of the Faculty Awards Compendium. For the academic year 2014-2015 votes were cast to nominate and vote for Faculty members, and no self-voting was allowed, to assure the integrity of the whole process. This volume of the Faculty Awards Compendium includes Faculty awardees within Fine Arts, Humanities, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Disciplines for the 2014-2015 academic year. A total of 1608 winning Faculty members in 584 higher education institutions were determined after tallying the votes. We would like to thank all Faculty members who participated in the voting process and to wish all the Faculty awardees continued success in their academic endeavors. We look forward to resuming the voting process for the 2015-2016 academic year awards.

Book Turning the Pages of American Girlhood

Download or read book Turning the Pages of American Girlhood written by Emily Hamilton-Honey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternating chapters of historical background and literary analysis, this study argues that postbellum series books inspired young women by illustrating the ways in which girls could participate in social change, whether through church societies, benevolent organizations, educational institutions or political groups. By 1900, however, the socialization of series heroines had shifted to the consumer marketplace, where girls could develop personality and taste through their purchases. Both models had benefits: Religious faith and political activism gave young women moral power within their communities; consuming gave them opportunities to indulge individual desires and often to socialize in public without adult oversight. This work adds to the existing scholarship on girls' culture not only by examining the beginnings of series fiction for girls and the models of womanhood it presented but also by tracing the shifting social ideologies of girlhood throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Book Themes in Dickens

Download or read book Themes in Dickens written by Peter J. Ponzio and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian age is often portrayed as an era of repressive social mores. Yet this simplified view ignores the context of Great Britain's profound shift, through rapid industrialization, from rural to metropolitan life during this time. Throughout his career, Charles Dickens addressed the numerous changes occurring in Victorian society. His portrayals of organized religion, class distinction, worker's rights, prison reform and rampant poverty resonated with readers experiencing social upheaval. Focusing on his novels, nonfiction writing, speeches and personal correspondence, this book explores Dickens's use of these themes as both literary devices and as a means to effect social progress.
