Book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996

Download or read book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996 written by W. Calvin Dickinson and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some 6,000 entries, A Bibliography of Tennessee History will prove to be an invaluable resource for anyone--students, historians, librarians, genealogists--engaged in researching Tennessee's rich and colorful past. A sequel to Sam B. Smith's invaluable 1973 work, Tennessee History: A Bibliography, this book follows a similar format and includes published books and essays, as well as many unpublished theses and dissertations, that have become available during the intervening years. The volume begins with sections on Reference, Natural History, and Native Americans. Its divisions then follow the major periods of the state's history: Before Statehood, State Development, Civil War, Late Nineteenth Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Late Twentieth Century. Sections on Literature and County Histories round out the book. Included is a helpful subject index that points the reader to particular persons, places, incidents, or topics. Substantial sections in this index highlight women's history and African American history, two areas in which scholarship has proliferated during the past two decades. The history of entertainment in Tennessee is also well represented in this volume, including, for example, hundreds of citations for writings about Elvis Presley and for works that treat Nashville and Memphis as major show business centers. The Literature section, meanwhile, includes citations for fiction and poetry relating to Tennessee history as well as for critical works about Tennessee writers. Throughout, the editors have strived to achieve a balance between comprehensive coverage and the need to be selective. The result is a volume that will benefit researchers for years to come. The Editors: W. Calvin Dickinson is professor of history at Tennessee Technological University. Eloise R. Hitchcock is head reference librarian at the University of the South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazard and Perry County have enjoyed a long and colorful history since founder Elijah Combs first settled in the area in 1795. The years have brought a multitude of changes, explored in this engaging visual history. Contained within these pages are vintage photographs depicting the history of an American small town that has always fancied itself a city. Images were culled from the collection at the Bobby Davis Museum, which includes selected photographs from John Kinner, Hal Cooner, L.O. Davis, and others. This work traces the area's development from an isolated mountain village to a center of Eastern Kentucky commerce and culture. Recorded in these images are the devastating floods that often threatened the community, as well as the building of the railroad that brought in everything from automobiles and telephones to Sears and Roebuck prefabricated homes. Aerial shots from the 1940s and 1950s are also included, and accompanying captions document the names and places familiar to oldtimers and intriguing to newcomers in Hazard, Perry County.

Book Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English

Download or read book Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English written by Michael B. Montgomery and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 3218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English is a revised and expanded edition of the Weatherford Award–winning Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English, published in 2005 and known in Appalachian studies circles as the most comprehensive reference work dedicated to Appalachian vernacular and linguistic practice. Editors Michael B. Montgomery and Jennifer K. N. Heinmiller document the variety of English used in parts of eight states, ranging from West Virginia to Georgia—an expansion of the first edition's geography, which was limited primarily to North Carolina and Tennessee—and include over 10,000 entries drawn from over 2,200 sources. The entries include approximately 35,000 citations to provide the reader with historical context, meaning, and usage. Around 1,600 of those examples are from letters written by Civil War soldiers and their family members, and another 4,000 are taken from regional oral history recordings. Decades in the making, the Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English surpasses the original by thousands of entries. There is no work of this magnitude available that so completely illustrates the rich language of the Smoky Mountains and Southern Appalachia.

Download or read book Trial and Triumph written by Carroll Van West and published by Univ Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of American History can no longer be complete without taking into account the African American perspective. For Tennessee, that perspective is amply provided by this anthology of articles from the Tennessee Historical Quarterly. Covering two hundred years of state history, from the frontier era to the bicentennial, Trial and Triumph presents the best and most current scholarship on African Americans in Tennessee. These selections give voice to many unheard people from Tennessee's past. Various essays recount the bravery of the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War, bring to light the diaries of the planter Robert Cartmell, whose writings reveal hostile relations between slaves and master; and celebrate the life of Girl Scouts activist Josephine Holloway, who helped nurture young girls in the face of prejudice. While focusing primarily on research from the 1990s that enriched our understanding of African American life, the collection also features valuable older articles on such topics as the black Baptist church and blacks on the Nashville frontier. With introductions by Caroll Van West explaining each chapter's place within boarder trends, Trial and Triumph is a provocative work that will help general readers and students to better appreciate events too often overlooked by standard accounts. These readings clearly show how the people, places, and events of the state's African American history point the way to new narratives of Tennessee history itself.

Download or read book The Confederate Ninth Tennessee Infantry written by James R. Fleming and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume is a worthy contribution to the regimental history genre. . . . useful for anyone interested in the Ninth or any of the campaigns and battles in which the regiment participated." -William H. Mulligan, Jr., The Civil War News "The reader gets a down-to-earth view of the Civil War from ordinary people. . . . recommended to Civil War enthusiasts, especially those interested in primary sources." -www.curledup.com Here is the story of the Confederate Ninth Tennessee Infantry, known as the "Southern Confederates," one of the most well-educated, zealously religious, and unbelievably gallant groups of men to engage in the American Civil War. Using the soldiers' actual letters, memoirs, war records, and obituaries, James R. Fleming documents this immortal "band of brothers," which included five of his own ancestors, as they endure the privations of life on the western front. This valuable historical and genealogical resource also includes discussions of the battles at Columbus, Perryville, and Atlanta, as well as the regiment's Order of Battle and each soldier's service record. The Confederate Ninth Tennessee Infantry contains a wealth of archival information taken from primary sources. The letters and reminiscences of Capt. James I. Hall, an educator who joined the war to watch over his young students, are published here in full for the first time. The author has also included C. B. Simonton's detailed contemporary account of the unit's organization, as well as transcripts of the speeches given at the presentation and acceptance of the company's first flag. Mr. Fleming also features a regimental chronology and a roster containing approximately eleven hundred official war records from the Compiled Service Records.
