Book A History of Grundy County

Download or read book A History of Grundy County written by James Everett Ford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Grundy County: Treating of Its Transformation From the Heart of the Wilderness of Yesterday, to the Heart of the Mighty Nation of Today; A Tribute to the Pioneer and Something of the Men Who Are Making the Grundy County of Tomorrow The purpose of this book is not only to narrate events, but to portray pioneer life; to call up our grandfathers in their picturesque attire, with their old - fashioned manners and quaint dialect, and have them show us over their log cabins; to see their rude furniture; to sit with them at the table, and by the fireplace; and to take a bird's eye view of the dense forests and broad prairies of Grundy County sixty years ago. And in the pioneer life of this county is an epitome of the pioneer life of the state. None too soon is this work undertaken. Even now we see as through a glass, darkly, the county's earliest history. The few old pioneers who have seen the twilight of its dawn are now far in the twi light of the evening of life. Soon such a work would be impossible. And I feel that there is need of a book of this kind; that it should be read by young as well as old. Every educator knows the value of the study of his tory - the study of the progress of the human mind and of the advance of the human race. But should we know more of the manners and customs of the Greeks than of our grandfathers? I think it is as essential to have a clear knowledge of the home life of the early Missourians as of the early Macedon ians. Book History of Grundy County Illinois Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Grundy County, Illinois When the Northwestern Territory was ceded to the United States by Virginia in 1784, it embraced only the territory lying between the Ohio and the Mississippi Rivers, and north to the northern limits of the United States. It coincided with the area now embraced in the States of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Visconsin, and that portion of Minnesota lying on the east side of the Mississipi River. The United States itself at that period extended no farther west than the Mississippi River; but by the purchase of Louisiana in 1803, the western boundary of the United States was extended to the Rocky Mountains and the Northern Pacific Ocean. The new territory thus added to the National domain, and subsequently opened to settlement, has been called the "New Northwest," in contradistinction from the old "Northwestern Territory." In comparison with the old Northwest this is a territory of vast magnitude. It includes an area of 1,887,850 square miles; being greater in extent than the united areas of all the Middle and Southern States, including Texas. Out of this magnificent territory have been erected eleven sovereign States and eight Territories, with an aggregate population, at the present time, of 13,000,000 inhabitants, or nearly one-third of the entire population of the United States. Its lakes are fresh-water seas, and the larger rivers of the continent flow for a thousand miles through its rich alluvial valleys and far-stretching prairies, more acres of which are arable and productive of the highest percentage of the cereals than of any other area of like extent on the globe. For the last twenty years the increase of population in the Northwest has been about as three to one in any other portion of the United States. In the year 1541, De Soto first saw the Great West in the New World. He, however, penetrated no farther north than the 35th parallel of latitude. The expedition resulted in his death and that of more than half his army, the remainder of whom found their way to Cuba, thence to Spain, in a tamished and demoralized condition. Book excerpt: In 1673, Louis Jolliet and Fr. Jacques Marquette were the first Europeans to explore the Mississippi River and the Illinois River valleys. With their canoes loaded with furs, pelts, and other goods on their return trip to Montreal, their explorations through much of the interior of Illinois included encounters with Native American tribes and took them through what is now Grundy County. Over 150 years later, the first permanent residents, including William Marquis, began settling and farming in the area. While the chief occupation of the residents is agriculture, the county also has the Illinois River and the Illinois and Michigan Canal that pass through its northern sections, as well as the Rock Island and the Chicago and Alton Railways. With communities rich in history and small-town charm, Grundy County continues to draw visitors and residents to its towns, parks, museums, rivers, and lakes. Grundy County attempts to reveal this unique county and its sense of community and pride.
