Book Irish Days Indian Memories

Download or read book Irish Days Indian Memories written by Conor Mulvagh and published by Irish Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Days, Indian Memories offers a unique insight into an unexpectedly momentous facet of Dublin’s political and student life from 1913 to the end of the turbulent year that was 1916. V.V. Giri, fourth President of India (1969-74), who would later say of himself ‘when I am not an Indian, I am an Irishman’, and a group of twelve Indian law students at King’s Inns and University College Dublin, witnessed and participated in the events of these dramatic years. Drawn from diaries, letters, military and university records, their memories of the Dublin Lockout, the Irish Volunteers, the Easter Rising, student integration and subversion provide a fascinating perspective on life inside and outside the university. This intersection with Ireland’s wartime and insurrectionary experience inspired V.V. Giri’s work for the Indian independence movement and had a profound effect on his fellow students. Through the eyes of Giri, his countrymen, and Conor Mulvagh’s expert research, a vivid and neglected narrative on 1916 is finally uncovered.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gandhian phase of national movement offered to the people a number of constructive programmes and political movements. The success of these programmes and movements depended on politicization and mobilization of the masses. In communicating and propagating the political ideas of the nationalist leaders to the masses the nationalist intelligentsia of Andhra played an effective and remarkable role. They were influenced by the Gandhian ideology and political techniques and through their writings influenced the people to a great extent. They made the people to believe, to accept, to support, to involve and to participate in the national movement. They criticised the colonial rule and authorised the national movement. In the process they wrote dramas, songs, books, pamphlets, leaflets and articles in newspapers imbuing the people with patriotic fervour, indomitable courage and heroic-sacrifice to an extraordinary degree. The consequent efflorescence of nationalist literature contributed to the formation of people s national consciousness and their voluntary participation in the national movement to such an extent that the colonial Government began to sense a threat to its own existence and was forced to resort to proscription and suppression of ideas and oppression of the freedom of the press.
