Book A Memorial of Ella Campbell Ewing Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Memorial of Ella Campbell Ewing Classic Reprint written by Class of 1905 Eureka College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memorial of Ella Campbell Ewing During commencement week at Eureka College in June, 1907, a group of the class of 1905, after a class dinner, was discussing the changes the two years of separation had brought. Uppermost in the minds of all was the loss which had come through the death of Ella Ewing after a service of three months in a mission station at Bolenge, Africa. This was a personal loss to all of these members of the class, for in her each had a friend. What could they do to show their appreciation of her life? One thing there suggested was the writing of a little volume that should tell her life story simply - just as it had been lived. It was believed that this might be an inspiration to young men and women who should read it for nobler, more consecrated living wherever their lives were cast. Perhaps in this way the influence of her life might be increased. It is with this desire that the book has been prepared. It has been hard not to eulogize when the subject has been so tempting, but the effort has been to tell the story truly and simply. Book A History of Winchester College Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Winchester College Classic Reprint written by Arthur Francis Leach and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Winchester College This is the first attempt at a connected and complete history of Winchester College and School "from the earliest times to the present day." The compression of the history of five hundred years into five hundred small pages is no easy task. Opinions will doubtless differ as to whether certain periods and certain aspects of the School life in that period have been treated in too great or too little detail. In all, I have endeavoured to go to first-hand evidence or first-class authorities, in spite of considerable obstruction in some quarters where it was least expected. Winchester being regarded as the origin and fountain head of the great system of Public School education, a considerable, though not, it is hoped, an undue amount of, space has been given to the ascertainment of its true place in the history of English education, and its relations to prior schools in general and those of Winchester in particular. If new light has been shed on this matter, I have to express my gratitude to the Very Reverend W. R. W. Stephens, Dean of Winchester, for the exceptional facilities afforded me of access to and use of the Cathedral records; and to the Rev. F. T. Madge, the librarian, for much information. Book History of Amherst College During Its First Half Century 1821 1871 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Amherst College During Its First Half Century 1821 1871 Classic Reprint written by W. S. Tyler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Amherst College During Its First Half Century, 1821-1871 This History was a part of the plan for the Semi-Centennial Celebration, and was at first intended to be in readiness for that occasion. The action of the Alumni and of the Trustees on the subject is narrated at the opening of the chapter touching the Jubilee, and may be found at page 595. The failure of the author's health rendered it necessary for him to defer the work for some time, and seek recuperation; and although by rest, with change of scene, this object was at length successfully accomplished, yet between the necessity of carefully guarding what was thus gained, and the daily occupation of College duties, he has been able to devote only a short time, two or three hours a day at most, to this extra labor. After the work of preparation was substantially done, unexpected delays, which need not be detailed, arose in regard to the publication. Prepared at the request of the Alumni and dedicated to them, the History has been written with constant reference to them as its most sympathizing and probably most numerous readers. Some of the best parts of it have been contributed by the Alumni themselves. A circular was sent to each Alumnus, at the outset, requesting him to "photograph for the author's use the College as it was in his day, his own class, any individual whether officer or student, any scene or event as it appeared to his eye." This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Eureka College With Biographical Sketches and Reminiscences: Illustrated At their annual reunion, June 16, 1892, the Alumni Association of Eureka College decided to publish a history of their Alma Mater. The work was placed in charge of a committee, consisting of Benjamin J. Radford, Clara S. Davidson, Carl Johann, Oliver W. Stewart, with Elmira J. Dickinson as chairman. The chairman of the committee was chosen editor of the book. Asa S. Fisher, the first teacher of the school that developed into Eureka College, who was associated with it nearly forty years, and who is the only survivor of those who were prominent in starting the enterprise, was appointed historian for the period extending from the beginning of it to the time of his leaving Eureka in 1886. From that time to the date of publication, Carl Johann was more fully associated with all the interests of the institution than any other person, and was therefore chosen to prepare the record of that period.
