Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Europe Rome and Athens, so far from being weakened, were im measurably strengthened by their colonies those flourish ing settlements which surrounded the Mediterranean Sea were the brilliant girdle which, as much as the arms of the Legions, contributed to the strength of the Empire and England would never have emerged victorious from her immortal conflict for European freedom, if she had not found in her colonial trade the means of maintaining the contest, when shut out from the markets of the Con tinent-al states. If it were permitted to follow fanciful analogies between the body politic and the human frame, it would be safer to say that the prolific parent of many colonies is like the happy mother of a numerous offspring, who exhibits, even in mature years, no symptoms of decline, and preserves the freshness and charms of youth for a much longer period than she who has never under gone the healthful labours of parturition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonization and Christianity: A Popular History of the Treatment of the Natives by the Europeans in All Their Colonies The object of this volume is to lay open to the public the most extensive and extraordinary system of crime which the world ever witnessed. It is a system which has been in full operation for more than three hundred years, and continues yet in unabating activity of evil. The apathy which has hitherto existed in England upon this subject has proceeded in a great measure from want of knowledge. National injustice towards. Particular tribes, or particular individuals, has excited the most lively feeling, and the most energetic exertions for its redress, - but the whole wide field of unchristian opera tions in which this country, more than any other, is engaged, has never yet been laid in a clear and compre hensive view before the public mind. It is no part of the present volume to suggest particular plans of remedy. The first business is to make known the nature and the extent of the evil, - that once perceived, in this great country there will not want either heads to plan or hands to accomplish all that is due to the rights of others, or. Book Memoir on the European Colonization of America in Ante Historic Times Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir on the European Colonization of America, in Ante-Historic Times It is far less difficult to show the possibility of reaching America, than it is to determine the period at which colonization began. We can only say, that it must have taken place before the introduction of bronze into N orth-western Europe. Many utensils of copper have been discovered in the American graves, but not a single one of bronze. This copper, was worked in a cold state, as is shown by pieces of metal found about the works of the North-west Mining Company. It is very evident from an ex amination of these masses, that portions have been separated from them for the purpose of being worked up. Bronze, however, is so much superior to pure copper in hardness and brilliancy, that no one after using it would return to the latter. Hence we may conclude with certainty that the people who emigrated from Europe to Ame rica, must have left their homes before bronze was known there. Had such not been the case, bronze would have been transplanted along with them to America - This conclusion is also strengthened by the fact that the American copper implements are imitations, not of the bronze implements of Europe, but of those of stone. Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Colonial History Classic Reprint written by Arthur Percival Newton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Colonial History For practical convenience the history of the territories beyond the confines of Europe that are inhabited or governed by men of European stock is classified under the rough heading of "Colonial History." In the United States of America, Brazil and the Spanish-speaking states of Central and South America the early colonies have cast off the yoke of the mother-country, and colonial history is concerned with their story only during the period that preceded the declaration of their independence. The subject does not deal with the internal history of particular oversea communities, which belongs rather to the "history of colonies," but with the process whereby Europeans have extended their influence beyond their own boundaries, and have either set up thriving communities of their own race or established their rule over native populations. Book Old Times in the Colonies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Times in the Colonies Classic Reprint written by Charles Carleton Coffin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Times in the Colonies The settlement of our country was the beginning of a new era in human affairs. The people of England, ever since the days of King John, when the barons compelled him to sign the Magna Charta in the meadow of Runnymede, had struggled against tyranny; and when the emigrants sailed across the Atlantic to rear their homes in Virginia and New England, it was the transplanting of liberty to a continent where everything was new, and where the conditions that surrounded them were wholly unlike those of the Old World. This volume is an outline of some of the principal events that tran spired during the colonial period of our country, and portrays the hard ships and sufferings of those who laid the foundations of a new empire. It will show how the Old World laws, habits, and customs were gradually changed; how the grand ideas of Freedom and the Rights of Man took root and flourished. It covers the period from the discovery and settle ment of America to the Revolutionary War. In 1876 I wrote a volume entitled The Boys of '76 - a narrative of the battles of the Revolution, and of the trials and devotion of our fathers in establishing the indepen dence of the United States. While preparing that work, I discovered that there was no volume in existence that would give the young people of our country an idea of the struggles of men in England and Europe against the tyranny of emperors, kings, popes, archbishops, bishops, and inquisitors; to supply that want, I wrote a second volume, entitled The Story of Liberty, which traced a chain of events through a period of five hundred years, from the signing of the Magna Charta to the settlement of Jamestown and Plymouth. This volume, therefore, fills the gap between the others in time, and together they make a series, not of general history, but an outline history of the progress of ideas. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expansion of Europe the Culmination of Modern History This little book is an attempt to survey, without any multiplicity of detail, but with an increasing degree of fullness as the story draws nearer to our own time, the sources and character of the great process by which, during the last four centuries, the whole world has been subjugated by the civilisation of Europe, and its bearing upon the problems of the Great War. I have tried to analyse briefly the nature of the share in this work taken by the chief European peoples who have participated in it. Naturally the pre dominant place is given to the British Empire. This must in any case have been so, since the British Empire covers one-quarter of the earth's surface. But I have given to it even more than its relative share of attention, partly because it is our chief concern, and partly because the variety of types which it includes makes it the most interesting political structure which has ever existed in the world, while the principles upon. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the History of the Political System of Europe and Its Colonies: From Its Formation at the Close of the Fifteenth Century to Its Re-Establishment Upon the Fall of Napoleon The very satisfactory account which the author himself has given of the plan and execution of his work, renders it quite unnecessary for the translator to say any thing upon that head; and the very fact of the work having passed through five editions in Germany, and having been translated into French, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch, is quite a sufficient apology, if indeed any were necessary, for presenting it to the English reader. He has therefore only to notice two matters connected with the translation, which may seem to require some explanation. The first is the use of the word States-System, which has been adopted throughout the work, and which, though perhaps not strictly English, seemed to him the only term by which he could adequately express the authors meaning. The second matter refers to the work in general, which, not having been all translated or revised by the same hand, may, it is feared, present a somewhat motley appearance to the nice and critical reader. Should this be found to be the case, the publisher humbly hopes for his indulgence, the more especially as he verily believes the sense of the original is in all cases faithfully given. Book A Short History of the English Colonies in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the English Colonies in America Classic Reprint written by Henry Cabot Lodge and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English Colonies in America The history of the thirteen American colonies is at best fragmentary and provincial, and does not assume the importance and value of the history of a nation until the meeting of the Stamp Act Congress at New York in the year 1765. But who and what the people were who fought the war for Independence and founded the United States - what was their life, what their habits, thoughts, and manners - seemed to me, when I began my study of American history, questions of the deepest interest. They were questions, too, which appeared to me never to have been answered in a compact and comprehensive form; and this volume is an attempt to supply the deficiency. The chapters, therefore, which purport to describe the various colonies in and about the year 1765 represent the purpose of the book. They have been worked out, in the course of several years, from a mass of material which has been collected in all directions, and which, although wholly in print, is in many cases as generally unknown as if it still slumbered in manuscript. To these chapters I have appended notes - mere references - partly to support conclusions which I thought might be questioned, and partly to aid other students in the same field. The notes represent, however, only a portion of the books, tracts, and newspapers actually consulted. There are many titles in my note-books of works which yielded nothing, and of others again which offered matter that had to be laid aside from mere superabundance of material: only the most valuable and important figure in the notes. On the other hand, that the volume might not become inconveniently bulky, it was thought desirable to make some retrenchments of the less essential matter in the earlier chapters, and in those on the Papal power, the Inquisition, and the Colonies.
