Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dissenters, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Revolution in 1688, to the Year 1808 To the enlightened reader, ecclesiastical history will forcibly Suggest the unspeakable importance of good ministers, in order to the support and advancement of the cause of Christ. Where they are wanting, every thing goes wrong; where they abound, the honour of God, and the happiness of man are extensively secured. In the formation of the character of a minister of Christ, two things are previously necessary, talents and piety, which in the language of the holy Scriptures are named gifts and graces. But these may be considered rather as radical powers, than an actual preparation for the office. Whatever talents a person may possess, we can view them in no higher light than a capacity of being qualified, not the qualification itself. As to the measure of talents requisite, they should not fell below mediocrity: the higher they rise above it, the greater benefit will accrue to the church of Christ. Book excerpt: This third and final volume of Michael Watts's study of dissent examines the turbulent times of Victorian Nonconformity, a period of faith and of doubt. Watts assesses the impacts of the major Dissenting preachers and provides insights into the various movements, such as romanticism and the higher, often German, biblical criticism. He shows that the preaching of hell and eternal damnation was more effective in recruiting to the chapels than the gentler interpretations. A major feature of the volume is a thorough analysis of surviving records of attendance at Nonconformist services. He provides fascinating accounts of Spurgeon and the other key figures of Nonconformity, including of the Salvation Army. Dr Watts also provides a fresh discussion of the contribution which Nonconformity made to the politics of mid- to late-Victorian Britain. He examines such issues of reform as Forster's Education Act of 1871, temperance, and Balfour's Education Act of 1902, and considers Nonconformist interventions in such controversies as the Bulgarian Agitation, Home Rule for Ireland, the Armenian massacres of the mid 1890s, and the Boer War. The volume concludes with the Liberal landslide in the 1906 general election, which saw probably more Nonconformists elected than any time since the era of Oliver Cromwell.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Dissenters, From the Revolution to the Year 1808, Vol. 2 of 2 Exeter, and Mr. James Hervey, who afterwards became celebrated for his Meditations. But their grand acqui sition was in the year 1734, when Mr. George Whit field, then about nineteen, joined himself to the society, of which he was destined to be the great Apollos. While yet ignorant of the Gospel, he practised such austerities as reduced him to extreme debility. In this state of mind, he was relieved by the kind attentions of Charles Wesley, who recommended him to the society of more experienced Christians, whose conversation, with the judicious application of medicines, healed both body and mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dissenters, Vol. 4 of 4: From the Revolution in 1688, to the Year 1808 This celebrated baronet was born about-the year 1637. His father was one of the first English gen; tlemen honoured with the new title. He married thedaughter of Charles F leetwood, esq. But was, in 1711, deprived of this lady, whom Dr. Watts de scribes ih her funeral sermon as a woman of eminent religion. From the same writer we, learn, that sir John joined the independent church over which Dr. Owen presided, and continued an honourable member, under successive pastors, to the day of his death. Boldly patronising the despised cause of the dissenters, amidst the fiercest persecutions, he was a devout and diligent attendant on their public worship, till the infirmities of years confined him to his private and domestic devotions. He frequently instructed his family by reading to them the dis courses which he had written from the lips of the first preachers in his early days; and to him we owe many of those which are contained in the folio volume of sermons and tracts by Dr. Owen, with whom he maintained the most endeared friendship. Book Protestant Nonconformist Texts Volume 2

Download or read book Protestant Nonconformist Texts Volume 2 written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of four substantial volumes designed to demonstrate the range of interests of the several Protestant Nonconformist traditions from the time of their Separatist harbingers to the end of the twentieth century. In this volume we are concerned with the eighteenth century. It was a period in which Old Dissent--the Congregationalists, Baptists, Presbyterians, and Quakers--had to face challenges from Enlightenment thought on the one hand and Evangelical Revival enthusiasm on the other. Largely in their own words, though with introductions contributed by the editors, we enter into the philosophical world of Isaac Watts, Richard Price, and others; we overhear doctrinal disputes over the doctrine of the Trinity; we meet such new arrivals on the religious scene as the Moravians, Sandemanians, Swedenborgians, and Methodists (Calvinistic and Arminian). We consider the Nonconformists' views on the Church, the ministry, and the sacraments; on Church, state, and society; and on Christian nurture, piety, and church life. From philosophical tomes to hymns, from sacramental questions to prison reform, from the most strait-laced Presbyterian to the most enthusiastic Jumper, this volume will remind scholars of the intellectual excitements, the practical witness, and the worship of the eighteenth-century Nonconformists.

Book The Puritan Literary Tradition

Download or read book The Puritan Literary Tradition written by Johanna Harris and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is meant by the Puritan literary tradition, and when did the idea of Puritan literature, as distinct from Puritan beliefs and practices, come into being? The answer is not straightforward. This volume addresses these questions by bringing together new research on a wide range of established and emerging literary subjects that help to articulate the Puritan literary tradition, including: political polemic and the performing arts; conversion and New-World narratives; individual and corporate life-writings; histories of exile and womens history; book history and the translation and circulation of Puritan literature abroad; Puritan epistolary networks; discourses of Puritan friendship; the historiography of Puritanism defined through editing and publishing; doctrinal controversy; and the history of emotions. This essay collection proposes that a Puritan literary tradition existed that was distinct from broader conceptions of early modern English and Protestant traditions and offers a nuanced account of the distinct and variegated contribution that Puritanism has made to the construction of literature as a concept in English. It ranges from the late sixteenth through to the nineteenth century, and spans British, European, and American Puritan cultures. It offers new analyses of well-known Puritan writers such as Anne Bradstreet, John Bunyan, Richard Baxter, and John Milton, as well as less familiar figures, such as Mary Rowlandson and Joseph Hussey, and writers less often associated with Puritanism, such as Andrew Marvell and Aphra Behn.
