Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1971, Georgia's Last Frontier presents the history of one of the state's least developed regions. During the 1830s, Carroll County was a large part of Georgia's most rugged frontier. James C. Bonner examines how life in this isolated region was complicated by the presence of Native Americans, cattle rustlers, and horse thieves. He details how the discovery of gold in the Villa Rica area resulted in drunkenness and violence, but also laid the foundations of mining technology that were later used in Colorado and California. The region remained isolated until after the Civil War, when a rail line was constructed to stimulate cotton cultivation. With the development of the railway, Carroll County's frontier traditions waned in the early twentieth century.

Book excerpt: The small village of Taneytown, nestled at the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains in central Maryland, has witnessed two and a half centuries of American history. The settlement's beginnings date to 1754 when it was founded on a 7,900-acre tract of land. By the end of the century, Taneytown was a bustling community that supported craftsmen of various trades. The most famous native son of the region is undoubtedly lawyer, poet, and author of The Star-Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key. With the outbreak of Civil War, Taneytown sent 75 of the district's 500 residents to the battle; few returned. The war had a drastic impact on the county, and the area did not flourish again until the arrival of the railroad in 1871. By the late 19th century, the region rebounded to become a small business hub with three cigar factories, a carriage maker's shop, two warehouses, a steam flour mill, and two banks. With new prosperity, many of the structures of the town were replaced with fashionable Victorian edifices. Today, the quaint charm and history of Taneytown continue to attract visitors from near and far.

Book excerpt: Delphi is nestled in the picturesque valley formed by the Wabash River and Deer Creek. Named for the Grecian city with its famed oracle, Delphi was envisioned by early residents as a center of culture for the surrounding area. Three courthouses have graced the central square in Delphi--the "seat of justice" in Carroll County since platted in 1828 by Gen. Samuel Milroy. When the Wabash and Erie Canal cut through the area in the 1840s, Delphi became a center for industry and commerce. Handsome three-story brick buildings appeared in the 1850s and surrounded the square by the 1880s. Area residents traveled to Delphi for trade, business, and entertainment. Delphi's opera houses drew traveling acts from Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and other cultural centers. Visitors today enjoy the architectural gems downtown and in nearby residential districts plus six parks with miles of groomed hiking and biking trails. The canal era is alive in Delphi at the Wabash and Erie Canal Interpretive Center where a replica boat takes visitors on a restored section of the historic waterway.
