Book History of Alameda County California Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Alameda County California Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Frank Clinton Merritt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Alameda County, California, Vol. 1 You can here close the book, and seek your history in more sordid publications. I like to think that the city, county, state or nation which has the most interesting history is the one which has an outstanding record for human achievement - a political unit which has taken a lead in culture, education, the arts, inventions, industrial growth, justice, and all that goes to make up the best things fin human thought and action. This chronicle, therefore, will not be one to fulfill the definition quoted but on the other hand will record the events of a county and its cities which have done their part in furnishing a generous quota to make our national history as we now hnd it. Crimes and misfortunes will creep into any accurate history, but they are mere incidents. They. Do not form the greater portion of the story. F ar-sighted and unselfish men and women have lived in Alameda County, and have devoted their intelligent energies and abilities to aid our marvelous progress. Their acts, lives and achievements are' history to me. Many have been born here, many have come to share our en viable advantages, who have gone up stream to fame and fortune; and I believe that the things which they have done should receive recog nition. There are many now with us who have won high places in the history of our county, state and nation. I believe that these men and women, and the events which they have brought about or helped create or complete are entitled to the recognition given herein that posterity shall not forget. And if this be not history, then I ask indulgent readers to apply the most favorable term which may come to mind. Memories are faulty and liable to err and forget. We may readily recall recent events with something bordering upon accuracy and com pleteness; but with the lapse of a few years important happenings and prominent personages become blurred, and, perhaps, even forgotten in the busy events of life. We owe a duty to those who have built great cities and'a great county to preserve a record of what they have done. There is the same duty to observe in respect to those who are now doing those things which are resulting in local advancement. There would be little incentive to serve one's country and fellow man, and little reward, perhaps, if there were not occasionally someone to take upon himself the task of trying to preserve the record. I do not believe that there is anyone selfish enough to deny the tribute earned and due those who have made our local history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Alameda County, California: Including Its Geology, Topography, Soil, and Productions To do this has been no easy task, yet, if the task has been laborious, it still has been a toil in which we have received much kind and valuable assistance. To the pioneer settlers the following pages should be found most interesting, relating as they do the experiences gained in a'new' country; while the volume, as a whole, should be cherished by their children, embodying as it does the tale of hardships endured by their sires. In the history of the city of Oakland we have been especially careful that little that is interesting should be left out; the chronicles of its early days, though lengthy, will be found replete with much valuable information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Past and Present of Alameda County, California, Vol. 2 Among the prominent and representative men of Alameda county none stands higher nor possesses a wider circle of friends than Frank K. Mott, the mayor of Oakland. A self-made man who, by his natural leadership, initiative and unswerving principles of honor, has risen from humble station through the several positions of mes senger boy, clerk, merchant, real-estate dealer, member of city coun cil and several times mayor of Oakland. In every capacity he has measured up to the highest standards of efficiency and more than satisfied the expectations of his friends and party. Frank K. Mott was born in San Francisco, January 21, 1866. His parents, Peter D. And Fannie K. Mott were from New York state and settled in San Francisco at an early day. Leaving school at the age of twelve years and working as a messenger boy for the Western Union and American District Telegraph Company, his education was of necessity very limited. However in a year's time he had advanced to the position of clerk and collector for the company, and he remained there for four years, at the end of which time he entered the employ of George S. Brown, a hardware merchant of Oakland. When he was twenty-two years of age Mr. Mott entered into partnership with A. E. Howard and together they succeeded to a part of the business. This firm continued for eleven years when Mott bought his partner out and became sole proprietor. In Janu ary, 1907, he sold his mercantile business and founded the well known firm of Frank K. Mott Company, real-estate brokers whose extensive dealings and manifold improvements have helped so materially toward a greater Oakland. Book History of Washington Township Alameda County California Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Washington Township Alameda County California Classic Reprint written by Country Club of Washington Township and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Washington Township, Alameda County, California The Country Club, under whose auspices this history is pub lished, was the outcome of two political equality societies, one of Centreville and one of Niles. The first meeting of the Woman's Club of Washington Township, afterward re-named the Country Club, was held in December, 1897, at the home of Mrs. C. H. Allen, Centreville. At that time there were present twenty-five women from different parts of the township, who became charter members of the club then organized. At the present writing six of the seven villages in the township are represented, and there are a few members from outside districts. Believing that the history of this township would be valuable as a part of Alameda County and of the State, the women of the Country Club began this work early in May, 1903. Every active member contributed something to it, and the heads of the various committees compiled the material into papers, which were read at a Golden Jubilee meeting, held Mav 19th, in the Town Hall of. Centreville, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the organi zation of the township. The past and the present, represented by the pioneers, their children and grandchildren, crowded the hall, which was tastefully decorated with great branches of golden mus tard blooms, California poppies, and. Wild oats in luxuriant pro fusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Illustrated Album of Alameda County California

Download or read book Illustrated Album of Alameda County California written by Jos Alex Colquhoun and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Album of Alameda County, California: Its Early History and Progress Agriculture, Viticulture and Horticulture Educational, Manufacturing and Railroad Advantages Oakland and Environs Interior Townships Statistics, Etc;, Etc The great territory west of the Rocky Mountains, extending to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, was comparatively unknown prior to the days of 1849. the four decades since that date this unknown territory has been peopled, five great States and two Territories founded. These States and Territories are as yet sparsely settled in comparison with the New England States and the countries of the Old World, but they are dotted over with cities, towns, and villages, and with farms and other industries, the wild children of the forests of fifty years ago having disappeared, most of them to the "happy hunting grounds" and the remainder on the government reservations. The area of this portion of our land is about seven hundred and fifty-six thousand nine hundred square miles. (This does not include Alaska, with its five hundred and seventy-eight thousand two hundred and four square miles.) On the western shore of this slope, occupying seven hundred miles out of the twelve hundred on the shore line by a width of from two hundred to two hundred and seventy miles, lies California, known as the Golden State. Its area is one hundred and fifty-eight thousand three hundred and sixty square miles. It lies between longitude 320 50' and 420 N., and 1140 and 1240 W. of latitude. By reason of its peculiar situation it has the most diversified climate of any State in the Union, and as a consequence its productions are more varied than those of any other. It is the second in area of the States. On the line between it and the State of Nevada in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, it is cold in the winter, with snow and ice, while at the foot of these mountains, and between them and the Pacific Ocean, lies a very temperate and almost semi-tropical extent of territory, upon which the thermometer seldom falls to 320 above zero. In the greater part of the State, the heliotrope, fuchsia, and other plants of that nature, as well as the palms and other ornamental shrubbery that are early carried to the greenhouses in the Hast, are allowed to grow out-of-doors the entire winter. It is of rare occurrence that any of them are injured by frost, and many persons born and raised in the State have only once or twice seen snow within forty years, except in the mountain ranges. Of this great State, Alameda (pronounced ala-may-dah, Spanish, meaning a driveway lined on each side by trees) County, the subject of this sketch, is a favorable part. Lying near the western coast, but yet far enough away to escape the sharp breezes and fogs prevalent along the coast, it has a most equable and even temperature, protected by remarkable natural phenomena. The succeeding pages are designed to set forth in a straightforward and truthful manner, without any boasting, the peculiar advantages of the county, and its cities and towns as places of residence, on account of healthful climatic conditions, its resources, growth, schools, railroads, etc. These are no overdrawn pictures, but simply statements of the fact. Chapter I. Early History and Progress. Spanish - American Missions of Alta California - John C. Fremont, "The Pathfinder" - Mexican War, Raising of the Bear Flag - Cession of California, Finding of Gold and Admission into the Union, etc. - Natural Advantages - Health Statistics - Meteorology, Rainfall, etc. - Material Growth - County Government. Alameda County, California, has a history dating back to 1797. During that year, under Governor Diego de Borica, of the then indefinitely known Spanish territory of Alta California, a settlement was made in the territory now embraced in this county by two friars, Ysidro Barcinallo and Augustin Merin, who, on the eighteenth day of June, founded the missi

Download or read book A History of California Vol 1 of 3 written by J. M. Guinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of California, Vol. 1 of 3: And an Extended History of Los Angeles and Environs Few states of the Union have a more varied, a more interesting or a more instructive his tory than California, and few have done so little to preserve their history. In this statement I do not contrast California with older states of the Atlantic seaboard, but draw a parallel be tween our state and the more recently created States of the far west, many years younger in statehood than the Golden State of the Pacific. When Kansas and Nebraska were uninhabited except by buffaloes and Indians, California was a populous state pouring fifty millions of gold yearly into the world's coffers. For more than a quarter of a century these states, from their public funds, have maintained state historical societies that have gathered and are preserving valuable historical material, while California, with out a protest, has allowed literary pot hunters and Speculative curio collectors to rob her of her historic treasures. When Washington, Montana and the two Dakotas were Indian hunting grounds, California was a state of a quarter million inhabitants; each of these states now has its State Historical Society supported by appropriations from its public funds. California, of all the states west of the Mississippi river, spends nothing from its public funds to collect and preserve its history. To a lover of California this is humiliating; to a student of her history exasperating. While preparing this History of California I visited all the large public libraries of the state. I found in all of them a very limited collection of books On California, and an almost entire absence of manuscripts and of the rarer books of the earlier eras. Evidently the demand for works per taining to California history is not very insistent, If it were, more of an effort would be put forth to procure them. The lack of interest in our history is due largely to the fact that California was settled by one nation and developed by another. In the rapid development of the state by the conquer ing nation, the trials, struggles and privations of the first colonists who were of another nation have been ignored or forgotten. No forefathers' day keeps their memory green, no observance celebrates the anniversary of their landing. To many of its people the history of California begins with the discovery of gold, and all before that time is regarded as of little importance.
