That when Caesar first invaded Britain 55 years be fore Christ, the Britains had no towns but dwelt in scattered huts. When they went out to battle they dyed their faces in order to terrify their enemies. In their religion they worshiped many Gods and most horrible were the sacrifices they practiced. The Romans were a civilized people and had been so for many centuries and it was not until Caesar's Second Invasion that the Britons knew fear. For it was at this time that the Chief of the tribe which had subdued many. Of the neighboring tribes, and whose stronghold was a stockade near the modern St. Albans found his followers seeking the protection of Caesar. He settled in Massachusetts, married three times, and died in 1633. John Eaton, of Dover (1611-1658), married Abigail Damon in 1630, emigrated in 1635, and settled in Massachusetts. William Eaton, of County Kent (1604-1658 or 1673), arrived in New England before 1637 with his wife Martha Jenkins, also settling in Massachusetts. Thomas Eaton landed in Rhode Island, married Jerusha Wing, and settled in New Jersey in 1670. Descendants of these immigrants have spread throughout the United States. This Eaton history also identifies descendants of the Nova Scotian, Welsh, and Irish branches of the family.

The greatest attention has been paid in examining the numerous works of the historian, topographer, genealogist and antiquarian, and many distant parts of both England and the United States have been visited by the author or his friends to in spect authentic records; yet unhappily, researches of this kind, can seldom be complete or entirely without mistake. Those only who know the fatigue of col leeting materials, and classing them for books of this sort, after a period of full twenty-five years has been spent in constantly watching, searching and waiting for facts, can form a proper judgment of such a laborious undertaking. The author's progress in investigating the genealogy of his family was greatly aided by a beloved father, who, one of nature's noblemen and an indefatigable antiquarian, first commenced the inquiry, imbued his son with a taste for the same, and fully intended to have completed it before his death. To his preserving hand the family are greatly indebted for many ms. Materials which otherwise would have been lost.
