Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pictorial Directory of Scotland's Castles is a unique publication. Over a three-year period, I have compiled a list of over 1000 Scottish castles. I decided some time ago that I would attempt something which, to the best of my knowledge, had never been done before. I was going to attempt to visit every Scottish castle which still had visible remains above ground, find as many as I could, photograph each one and list it with a brief history of each castle. I have included hand-painted coats of arms of the clan chiefs and nobility who owned them and the clan crests. On each castle page, I have also given detailed directions on how to find each castle, complete with a What3words location, some tips on accessibility, facilities, nearby points of interest, examples of clan tartans, plant badges, and much more.

Book excerpt: In the nearly two centuries since the first building's completion in Thomas Jefferson's academical village, programs and facilities at the University of Virginia have been continually expanded and updated. This second edition of Susan Tyler Hitchcock's The University of Virginia: A Pictorial History, first published in 1999 and updated in 2003, traces Mr. Jefferson's favorite project through an appropriately rich pageant of images and text. The book's main chapters, arranged chronologically, follow the rise of the university from its founding to the accomplishments of John T. Casteen III's presidency and the appointment of Teresa A. Sullivan as the university's eighth, and first female, president. In this second edition, Casteen's legacy is considered, including AccessUVa, the university's groundbreaking full-need financial aid program; initiatives to position the University of Virginia as a global leader; and major expansion of the physical facilities, including the Arts Precinct, the South Lawn Project, John Paul Jones Arena, the Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library, and groundbreaking for the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center. The final chapter includes an essay on the historic preservation of the Academical Village and looks forward with new president Teresa A. Sullivan as Mr. Jefferson's university sits poised on the eve of its bicentennial celebration. Highlights include interviews with John T. Casteen III and Teresa A. Sullivan.

Download or read book No Strings Attached written by Rachel Nafziger Hartzler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Strings Attached is the story of a Mennonite congregation in Indiana that existed for eighty-six years. The congregation began during the social and religious turmoil of the 1920s when some Mennonites in North America held to rigid doctrines and ethics implemented by central authority, and others operated with a congregational polity and became more assimilated into secular culture. The struggle between these two different understandings of faithfulness was most passionately played out in northern Indiana. Placing the narrative of this congregation within the context of 500 years of Mennonite history illustrates the grace and the tension that has both beset and empowered a unique group of people who began as radical reformers. Although "no strings attached" refers to the women's headwear during the 1920s, which had no strings, it could also be the story of the pastor eating lunch on the peak of the steep roof of the church building! Reflecting on stories of these Mennonite people is an invitation to move into the future with courageous hope. Believing and behaving differently has not prevented Middlebury Mennonites from treating each other respectfully, living in a community of love, joy, and peace, and offering God's healing and hope to each other and to the world.
Download or read book The Willits Brothers and Their Canoes written by Patrick F. Chapman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-05-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For half a century Earl and Floyd Willits built some of the world's finest canoes, first near Artondale, Washington, then on Day Island, right off of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Turning out approximately twenty canoes a year, carefully logging and numbering each one, the brothers emphasized quality and design rather than volume. Willits Brothers Canoe Company earned a reputation that enabled the tiny company to compete successfully with businesses much larger, leaving a name and legacy which is still admired by canoe aficionados today. Carefully researched and documented, this combination biography and company history tells the story of Earl and Floyd Willits and their unique canoe company. Beginning with their family's westward migration from Illinois, it follows the brothers as they set about starting the business that would become their lifelong work. Close attention is given to the Willitses' business management and construction techniques as well as their personal lives. Interviews with surviving contemporaries and family members add a personal dimension to the Willitses' story. Appendices include a detailed company logbook, instructions from the Willits brothers on various areas of canoe use and maintenance, a price list of canoes from 1928 to 1964 and a list of serial numbers and dates of manufacture. In addition, a price comparison with the Old Town Canoe Company, a listing of museums exhibiting a Willits Brothers canoe, two Willits Brothers Canoe company catalogs and various plans of Willits canoes are provided. Contemporary photographs from the Willits family collection are also included.
