Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, founded on November 11, 1885, has grown from a single location in the central part of the State, to campuses and group homes from the mountains to the coast. The early visionaries were strong-willed and hard working people. They were consumed with a passion for making life better for disadvantaged children. Their genius lay in their determination to succeed, no matter what the obstacles. A Place for Miracles details some of those early struggles to overcome opposition to the Orphanage, find suitable land for construction, and secure enough money with which to begin. But the book is more than just a recital of historical events. Rather, A Place for Miracles pinpoints the elements that have made the Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina what it is today: values, mission, people, actions, results. The founders of the Orphanage meant for it to be a place where children would stay for only a short time. However, children came, often at early ages, and spent their entire childhood living in a self-contained community. They attended school on campus, worshipped on campus, ate meals on campus, and became "family." Older alumni refer to each other as "brothers and sisters." The Orphanage, for all intents and purposes, was the only life they knew.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love in Action: The Story of the Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina It is agreed by all leading welfare authorities that children's homes such as ours are absolutely essential in this generation. Hence, an ever-increasing support by our great denomination 1s a must if we are to continue to blaze trails m this important phase of Christian service. Keep in mind that your children's homes were first in Mother's Aid in 1920: four years later the North Carolina Legislature appropriated for this worthy cause. Then a few years later the Federal government entered this field of service on a matching basis with the states and called it Aid to Dependent Children, or This action relieved the Baptists of the major burden of Mother's Aid. But there are still certain cases that cannot meet government standards. We now serve with financial aid an average of about sixty children each year while they continue to live with their own mothers. We were also among the first of the. Children's institutions to adopt the Foster Home Program, and we had the first trained social worker in any of the Southern child care agencies. In fact we had one of the first trained social workers in North Carolina. She entered this field in 1923 to supervise the Mother's Aid Program. Book A History of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina

Download or read book A History of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina written by J. A. Whitted and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writer of this little book has fulfilled a long cherished desire, not in its best sense to say a history, but to lay some kind of foundation, so that the historian of the future may have something to build upon and may someday give to the world the facts concerning the service, sacrifice and achievements of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina. While the difficulty in obtaining information at times has caused discouragement and delay, the writer has never engaged in any task which has brought to him so much satisfaction and pleasure, and he will feel amply repaid if the readers find half so much pleasure and profit in the reading. The writer, too, expresses the hope when some other shall undertake to build on this foundation it will not be so difficult to obtain the necessary information. To all who have responded and have furnished data for this book the writer wishes to express his grateful acknowledgment.

This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina Relating to another statement in the Convention of 1850 is the following' The churches of the State are urged to establish schools for the oral instruction of the colored people. In some instances the colored people were allowed to hold services conducted by some member of their own race in some sections and at specified times, but such meetings were usually held under the supervision of a white man, and at his discretion these meetings were brought to a close. In very many instances such meetings were even con ducted by a member of the white race. In matters of discipline, especially if a white member was involved, the colored people had no voice whatever. In matters affecting their own number often some colored brother in whom the church had confidence would make re ports and recommendations. In compliance with the resolution of 1837, which we have already mentioned, in some instances provision was made in the erection of the church edifice by petition, and in the galleries for the accommodation of the colored brethren. In the communion services, after the bread andlwine had been passed to the white brethren, it was passed in turn to the colored brethren. This was regarded by them as a God-sent privilege and a blessing, for which their Amens were often loud and lasting.
