Book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint written by Walter W. Skeat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of English Etymology The present volume is intended to serve as a help to the student of English etymology. In my Etymological Dictionary, the numerous examples of similar letter - changes are invariably separated from each other, by the necessity for adhering to the alphabetical order. It is therefore advisable to re-arrange the results so as to shew what words should be under consideration at the same time. It is only by a com parison of this character that the various phonetic laws can be properly observed and tested. I have found it advisable to follow the example of Mr. Sweet, in his History of English Sounds, and to consider what may be called the 'native element' of our language apart from the Romance or imported element. Hence I have purposely excluded all words of French origin from the present investigation. A few French words are quoted here and there by way of illustration, but no inferences are here drawn from the results which their history furnishes. If the present volume should meet with approval, I propose to issue another volume, to be entitled 'second Series, ' Which will deal particularly, and almost exclusively, with the words which have been imported into English from French, as well as from Latin, Greek, and other languages (except Teutonic and Celtic) af/er the N orman Conquest. Book Elements of English Etymology

Download or read book Elements of English Etymology written by James W. Connor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of English Etymology: For the Use of Public and High Schools As this little work will be found to differ in many points from others on the same subject, it may not be out of place to illustrate here the difference between modern Etymological procedure and the crude, though ingenious, guess work that it is fast superseding. We will give a single example. An eminent writer on literature identifies as with German es, (it); and this plausible-enough conjecture is adopted by many without proof, or, apparently, any thought that proof is needed. But a very little research will show us that as used to be ealswa, also, passing through the intermediate form als, while the only letter as and es have in common, is in the latter a mere inflective ending, as also in das, was, answering in fact to the t of it, that, what. Thus modern Etymology is a comparative and historical science, establishing great "laws," or statements of sequence, by reference to which we can determine whether any particular derivation is correct or not. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Etymology and Syntax of the English Language Explained: Illustrated The success, with which the principles of any art or science are investigated, is generally proportioned to the number of those, whose labours are directed to its cultivation and improvement. Inquiry is necessarily the parent of knowledge; error itself, proceeding from discussion, leads ultimately to the establishment of truth. Were we to estimate our progress in the knowledge of English grammar from the number of works already published on the subject, we should perhaps be prompted to infer, that in a field so circumscribed, and at the same time so often and so ably explored, no object worthy of notice could have escaped attention.
