Her first settlers, while yet in the discomforts of their log huts, watching with sleepless vigilance the lurking savage, made education and religion the first objects of interest, and reared the school-house and the sanctuary. Upon these great principles, - universal education and freedom of conscience, - they based the grand super structure they have reared at such cost. Material was being prepared for a great edifice, and it must be out, not from clay but solid granite. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History and Description of New England

Download or read book History and Description of New England written by Austin Jacobs Coolidge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Description of New England: Vermont The first volume of the History and Description of New England, embracing the States of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, has already been issued from the press. In bringing out the present volume, relating to Vermont alone, the authors would by no means underrate the importance of presenting the work, as far as possible, in its most compact form, that the mutual relation and dependence, each upon the other, of the several States, and the strong ties of brotherhood between their respective citizens, may be better understood and more sensibly felt by turning the leaves of their history and gathering evidence of their material prosperity from one and the same volume. But they can perceive no good reason why the desires of many who either prefer the whole work in separate States, or can only afford to present themselves with the volume treating of their own State, should not be gratified in the amplest manner. To the matter contained in the larger volume, has been added a list of the sons of Vermont, resident in Boston and vicinity, with their various occupations, and their places of residence or business, which much enhances the value of the work among business men, especially to those engaged in trade. It also contains biographical notices of distinguished and useful men, and much other information of that practical character which it is believed will enable it to demand and receive the public approval. Vermont asks no more of her sons, at home or abroad, than that they should be true to the inspiration of their native hills in indus try, practical economy, benevolence, patriotism, and filial piety; or to use more comprehensive terms - ia religion and common sense. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Description of New England, New Hampshire In 1634, Mason and Gorges, whose brilliant visions of wealth and fame still sustained them, attempted to revive their plantation, and sent over a fresh supply Of servants, and materials for building, appointing Francis Tilliams as their governor. A short time after this, (163-51) the Plymouth Company surrendered their charter to the crown, it having been complained of as a monopoly; and though Gorges used every species of argument to defend it from the allegation, all was of no avail. Prior to this event, l\iason and Gorges secured to themselves a portion Of the territory thus escheated to the crown, Mason's grant compris ing both his former patents, which were further increased by a purchase from Gorges Of a tract on'the northeast side of the Piscataqua, three miles in breadth from its mouth to its farthest head, including a saw mill at the falls Of Newiehawannock.'1 Our brightest visions Often fail Of realization, and it was thus with Mason. Just at 'a period when the darling schemes which he had nurtured were assuming something of a tangible shape, he was removed by death, and his American estate, which was valued in the inventory at sterling, was left by will to his relatives. After his death, his widow and executrix sent over Francis Norton as her general attorney, to whom she committed the whole management of her late husband's estate. The expenses so far exceeded the income that she was unable to meet the demands, and was obliged to relinquish the care Of the settlement. Many of the set tlers removed from the plantation, while those who remained kept pos session of the buildings and improvements, claiming them as their own. Thus, that which had but a few years before promised so much, and had cost Mason his fortune, was lost to the heirs. These events hap pened between 1638 and 1644. The heirs, however, had no idea of giving up so valuable an estate without an effort, and a series Of suits were instituted, which reached through a number of years. Book History of Unity Maine Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Unity Maine Classic Reprint written by James R. Taber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Unity, Maine To the casual observer, the collecting Of these brief notes may seem a Simple task, but I find that all those who have undertaken a Similar work tell a different story. It is evident that but little care was given our early records, as we find them in bad condition, many entirely missing. I have spent much time in looking over what we have, and in searching the records of Massachusetts prior to 1820. It has been difficult to trace the ownership of the different farms back to their first owners. Often there have been conflicting state ments, which has rendered it impossible to give a correct version. I Wish to say that if errors or omis sions occur, the absence Of the requisite information must be my apology. I intend to leave blank pages at the back of the book, where any error may be re corded for the benefit Of the future historian. To the Brief History Of Unity, published in 1892 by our worthy townsman, the late Edmund Murch, I am indebted for many notes of interest. I wish also to thank the many friends who have assisted me in compiling these statistics and to express at this time to the citizens of Unity my appreciation of the loyal support they have given me during the many years that I have lived and worked among them. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Colonial Maine, 1602-1658 In the following pages an attempt is made to record the promi nent facts with reference to the beginnings of colonial Maine. To the earlier part of these beginnings, neither Sullivan in his History of the District of Maine nor Williamson in his History of the State of Maine devoted much space. When they wrote, the known and accessible sources of information concern ing those earlier undertakings were exceedingly scanty. Careful research, however, especially in the last half century, has brought to light valuable original materials for the history of that earlier period, and the discovery of these materials has greatly enlarged our knowledge with reference both to facts and persons. In this part, which I have obtained from the memory of aged people, some errors may appear, but in the main it will be found correct, as a great deal of pains has been taken to verify these records. Book Stories of Maine Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Maine The stories of the smallest, the least important, the most favored by fate of the United States of the New World, are well worth the telling. It may therefore be wondered that those of Maine - historically the beginning of New England, the scene of the bloodiest Indian wars, the place where different European nations contended most fiercely for supremacy, and whose records are so dramatic that they read like folklore and legend rather than veritable history - should have been so little told. Many of those that have been told are to be found in histories that are out of print and forgotten, and in the musty folios of the historical societies, where the young people, at least, seldom look. Some not yet, and perhaps never to be read, have been written by glaciers and fossil remains on rocky headlands and in obscure caves. In remote graveyards strange foreign names and inscriptions hint of others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
