Book excerpt: "The book puts together for the first time, valuable updated information, that looks at children's television from its early days up to current digital age, with its digital media offerings and availability. It offers new insights about a central children's media culture and focuses on non-Anglo-American television histories. Thus, readers interested in understanding past to present, local and global processes in children's television, would be able to find it in one book. Scholars, students, and professionals working in the field of children, as well as everyone concerned in children's culture could find a great diversity of knowledge about cultural, social, political, and economic contexts of programs they and their children grew-up with. This edited book based on a collective effort of researchers and professionals dedicated to compile the stories of children's television around the world. With 12 national chapters, the book includes historical accounts of children's television from the following countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Kenia, Netherlands and USA. It provides an exploration of each individual country, revealing striking similarities and differences, discussed in depth in the final chapter. Looking at the global field through local eyes--its main texts and active players (broadcasters, producers and creators, as well as regulators and policy makers), their ideologies, financial prospects and perceptions of childhood--offers a macro-level evaluation of an entire cultural field. This is a valuable picture, as it provides a contextualized perspective that could be reflected upon in every micro analysis of a specific program"--

Children and Television is a readable and interesting introduction to research on children and television by scholars in a variety of social science disciplines as well as media professions." Set within a multicultural context, Gordon L. Berry and Joy Keiko Asamen explore how television influences our children. Children and Television identifies the social and cultural impact of television on the psychosocial development of children who are growing up in an ever-changing, multicultural world. A thought-provoking and challenging book, it analyzes major media organizations and projects policies, practices, and research directions for the future. Contributors discuss various forms of television and its effect on attention, comprehension, and behavior; television′s effects on imaginative and creative capabilities of children; and the medium′s influence on the socialization of youth. They also cover the cultural content of Saturday morning television; the portrayal of major ethnic and racial minority populations in the United States and the effects these portrayals have on children′s attitudes toward these populations; and the portrayal of women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

Book Hi There Boys and Girls

Download or read book Hi There Boys and Girls written by Tim Hollis and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-01-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever happened to Bozo the Clown, to Aunt Norma, to Solomon C. Whiskers, those television celebrities who hammed it up between cartoons and contests during local kids' shows? In Hi There, Boys and Girls! America's Local Children's TV Programs, Tim Hollis tracks down the story of every known local children's TV show from markets across the United States. There have been many books about children's television on the networks, and such shows as Captain Kangaroo, Howdy Doody, and Sesame Street are legends in broadcasting. However, the local branch of children's programming has received much less attention. For every performer on the scale of a Captain Kangaroo or a Buffalo Bob, there were five or six local personalities who were just as beloved by their viewers--and sometimes even more so--since these local stars could be counted on for appearances at stores, children's hospitals, and shopping centers, where kids could meet them face-to-face. Anyone over the age of thirty who grew up with a TV set will remember at least one or two of these productions. Whether it was hosted by a cowboy character, a clown such as the one on the many-franchised Bozo shows, a policeman, a sea captain who showed Popeye cartoons, or one of the gentle and lovely ladies who presided over Romper Room, these hometown stars were some of the Baby Boomers' first friends. Although children loved them, these hard-working performers garnered less respect from the rest of the TV industry. Hi There, Boys and Girls! includes a capsule history of this programming from the earliest days of radio to the early 1970s, when a combination of social changes and broadcast regulations sent most of the hosts into retirement. Walt Disney once observed that while there is very little adult in a child, there is a lot of child in every adult. This book will bring back a flood of long-submerged memories for anyone who was a child during this golden era.

Download or read book Television written by Anthony Smith and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its earliest beginnings, television was destined to become one of the great new forces at work in the twentieth century. This new edition (which includes six completely new chapters) greatly expands the original and unique historical coverage of this most influential cultural phenomenon. Written by a distinguished international team of specialists, the book describes the history of television from its technical conception in the nineteenth century right through to the bewildering multi-media developments of the present. Alongside this historical account, chapters provide important discussion of the central debates affecting television world-wide, from America, Canada, and Britain to Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, China, South Asia, the Arab world, Australia, Africa, and the Third World. All genres of programme making--news, sport, drama, comedy--are examined in the light of key questions: how viewing practices affect particular societies; how standards of taste and decency are arrived at; the influence of television of government power; the role of public service broadcasting; and the relationship of television to terrorism and violence. A thought-provoking Epilogue ponders the likely impact and influence of television in the coming years. This book is accessibly written and is a major exploration of the world's most dominant medium.
