Book A Field Guide to Custer s Camps

Download or read book A Field Guide to Custer s Camps written by Don Weinell and published by North Dakota State University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Field Guide to Custer's Camps: On the March to the Little Bighorn is an easy-to-use guide to understanding the route followed by George Armstrong Custer and his troops as they marched to their most famous battle. Maps, driving directions, and brief descriptions of each campsite allow the most casual travelers, the more serious hikers, bikers, historians, and history buffs to better appreciate the challenges faced by US soldiers serving on the northern plains in 1876.Much has been written about the battle, but little has been said about the route taken by the Dakota Column (including the 7th Cavalry) from Fort Abraham Lincoln to the Little Bighorn battlefield. By experiencing the landscape of western North Dakota and eastern Montana-much of it little changed since Custer's last days-a wider understanding of the battlefield decisions is revealed.A Field Guide to Custer's Camps reveals the logistical problems faced by a large column of troops moving across the northern plains, demonstrating how weather, distance, and individual personalities influence and often alter logistical plans. Many of the campsites are within just a few miles of Interstate 94 and offer the chance for a closer look at the North Dakota and Montana landscape.Don Weinell, a long-distance bicyclist, biked the trail described herein, keeping a log of his experiences and GPS locations, which inform the travel narrative for A Field Guide to Custer's Camps. Weinell's on-the-ground method of exploring history puts him in contact with the elements, the terrain, and the physical demands of cross-country travel. For readers not quite ready to don rain jackets, cold- and hot-weather wear, or snakebite kits, this field guide is the next best thing to following the trail in person.Featuring 2 fold-out maps, 77 full color maps and photographs, GPS coordinates, detailed instructions, and narrative sketches, this field guide takes you on the ground and back in history.

Book G A Custer to the Little Big Horn

Download or read book G A Custer to the Little Big Horn written by Steve Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by renowned historian Mr. Steve Alexander, traces the life and deeds of George Armstrong Custer from his beginnings to his famous Last Stand and death on June 25th, 1876 near the Little Big Horn River in southeastern Montana Territory. Mr. Alexander's "G.A. Custer to the Little Big Horn" is an in-depth approach to the always controversial figure and a reflection on the man, his time and the myth through exhaustive research and understanding gained from a whole life of study and dedication. Brilliant text and more than 200 period photographs and full color pictures - many of them designed specifically for this book - are interwoven here to render a distinctive work which stands out among the myriad of books already published on the famous encounter between Custer's 7th Cavalry and the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne, led by Sitting Bull. The book also includes a prologue by Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow, last War Chief of the Crow tribe, and an impressive color fold-out map with clear details of the famous battle. Proclaimed the "Foremost Custer Living Historian" by the United States Congress, Steve Alexander has been acknowledged by both the Michigan and Ohio Senates for his lifetime work and portrayal of America's most controversial military leader. Steve has appeared in over three dozen docudramas as the General, most recent being the Discovery Times: Only in America. His work for the History Channel includes "Command Decisions", "Trail with General Custer" and the "Little Big Horn - The Untold Story." Both television documentaries and the television portrayals "Biography of Custer" and Bill Kurtis' "Betrayal at Little Big Horn" in the "New Explorers" series cast Steve Alexander as General Custer again and received awards for the top historical presentations in 1998 & 1999. He and his wife Sandy now reside in the Bacon-Custer home in Monroe, Michigan, the General's adopted hometown, which they are in the process of restoring. Well-known to the people of Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota, Steve is also responsible for the text of the new historical marker in Hunterstown, PA and annually represents General Custer at Gettysburg, Appomattox and other Civil War events. He was honored to represent the state of North Dakota during the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington D. C. Instrumental in reestablishing the Annual Custer's Last Stand Reenactment in Hardin, Montana, he now participates in the Real Bird Reenactment of the Little Big Horn on the Original Battlefield each year, during the battle's anniversary weekend. Steve has been the recipient of the Custer Battlefield Historical and Museum Association's Editor's Choice Award and duly honored by Joe Medicine Crow, Tribal Historian bestowing the Crow Indian name Ika' Dieux' Daka', "Son of the Morning Star" a name previously held by only one man: George Armstrong Custer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Easily the most significant book yet published on the Battle of the Little Bighorn."--Paul L. Hedren, Western Historical Quarterly "[Gray] has applied rigorous analysis as no previous historian has done to these oft-analyzed events. His detailed time-motion study of the movements of the various participants frankly boggles the mind of this reviewer. No one will be able to write of this battle again without reckoning with Gray"--Thomas W. Dunlay, Journal of American History "Gray challenges many time~honored beliefs about the battle. Perhaps most significantly, he brings in as much as possible the testimony of the Indian witnesses, especially that of the young scout Curley, which generations of historians have dismissed for contradictions that Gray convincingly demonstrates were caused not by Curley but by the assumptions made by his questioners . . . The contrasts in [this] book. . . restate the basic components of what still attracts the imagination to the Little Bighorn."--Los Angeles Times Book Review "Gray's analysis, by and large, is impressively drawn; it is an immensely logical reconstruction that should stand the test of time. As a contribution to Custer and Indian wars literature, it is indeed masterful."--Jerome A. Greene, New Mexico Historical Review John S. Gray was a distinguished historian whose books included the acclaimed Centennial Campaign: The Sioux War of 1876. Custer's Last Campaign is the winner of the Western Writers of American Spur award and the Little Bighorn Associates John M. Carroll Literary Award.

Book Custer s Luck

Download or read book Custer s Luck written by Edgar Irving Stewart and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1955 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is undoubtedly a remarkable book on a period of American history about which much has been written - the period of the Indian wars in the Northwest, from the close of the Civil War until the Custer disaster on the Little Big Horn. It presents in graphic detail and on a vast canvas the great events and the small which reached a decisive crescendo in Custer’s fate. Here is no savage battle incident presented in isolation from other events, but a sweeping panorama of a whole ere-inept, hesitant, and tragic. To insure comprehensiveness, the author describes the pertinent facts of the Grant administration, the embitterment of the Great Plains tribes, and the deteriorating Civil War army. The book is the record not only of the dashing Seventh Cavalry and its leader but also of the Grant-Custer feud, Sitting Bull, the Belknap scandal, Rain-in-the-Face, the battle strategy of the Indians, and Custer’s military rivals. Particular note is taken of the effect on history of Custer’s recklessness and glory-seeking and of the superstitions and fatalistic determination of the Sioux and the Cheyennes. The Battle of the Little Big Horn, reconstructed in this account largely on Indian eyewitness testimony, climaxed the long-developing tragedy and provided a "smashing crescendo to the vacillating policy of the United States government...towards the Indians of the Great Plains." A four color reproduction of an oil painting by John Hauser, entitled "The Challenge," has been selected for the cover of Custer’s Luck. The original canvas is in the collection of the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the publishers gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of that organization in making this reproduction possible.
