This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches of Education in Michigan Among the men who traveled widely throughout New England and New York was Prof. J. Orville Taylor, editor of an educational monthly, The Common School Assistant, published at Albany, N. Y., and the agent and manager of an enterprising school-book publishing concern, styled The American Com mon School Union. Mr. Taylor visited Detroit in June, 1839, and from there started on a lecturing tour throughout the southern part of the State, visiting fourteen of the leading places in the southern tiers of counties. He was probably the pioneer in the State of that corps of school-book agents who have from that day to this been among the most active and progressive friends and advocates of good schools, good education, good methods, and good books. In the number of his magazine for September, 1839, we find the following very interesting description of his visit to Ypsilanti, June 10, 1839. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches of Education in Michigan In every department of life it is useful, at times, to review the past, in order that we may properly understand the present, and be better enabled to make intelligent advancement in the future. Believing that a retrospective view of the progress of education in the State of Michigan would be conducive to good, these sketches, which are largely a compilation from various reliable sources, have been prepared. It is a source of gratification to every friend of American institutions that changes of power in the political departments of the government bring with them no diminution of interest in relation to the instruction of the rising generation. Education is a subject of paramount importance with all, differences of opinion existing only as to the modes by which the widest blessings may he bestowed, and the most enduring results secured. It is a peculiar characteristic of the American people, and more especially of that portion by whom, for the most part, the states of the Northwest were settled, that they have ever contributed of their means, whether scanty or ample, for the benefit of education, with a liberality and zeal which deserve our gratitude, and which will forever deserve the gratitude of posterity. The early settlers of our common country were willing to stint themselves, and to submit to every hardship incident to their settlement on the shores of a new world, that by these means future generations of men might find no excuse for the encroachments of ignorance and vice and despotism, in their neglect to provide for the means of universal free education. It was the sagacity and forethought of such men, which, by an ordinance of the Congress of the Confederation, in 1785, laid the broad foundation of free education in the munificent appropriation of the one-thirty-sixth part of the public domain for the use of schools forever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Michigan One early June day some fourscore years ago, it was 1837 to be precise, a party of distinguished visitors arrived in what was then the little backwoods community of Ann Arbor. The interest of the loiterers at the country tavern and the corner grocery was no doubt aroused by their com ing, for Ann Arbor we may suppose was not different from other small places; and this curiosity could hardly have been lessened by the fact that the newcomers were all men who figured prominently in the affairs of the State, which had been admitted to the Union only four months before. Whatever the speculation aroused by the personnel of the party, however, the business that called them to Ann Arbor caused little comment, if we are to judge from contemporary reports. Yet this unpretentious gathering of notables was charged with the inauguration of what was to become one of the most significant developments in the history of American education, - the establishment and successful maintenance of a University by the people of a State. Book John D Pierce Founder of the Michigan School System

Download or read book John D Pierce Founder of the Michigan School System written by Charles O. Hoyt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John D. Pierce, Founder of the Michigan School System: A Study of Education in the Northwest The chief idea underlying the preparation of this volume has been to present to the people of Michigan a true account of the life and work of John D. Pierce, our first Superintendent of Public Instruction. Almost seventy years have gone since he entered upon his educational work, and more than twenty years since his death, and as yet no adequate study of his career has appeared. His memory is deserving of better treatment from the generation of to-day, and if this book shall contribute in any way to bring about even a tardy recognition of his services, its purpose will have been accomplished. It is only proper to say that this study is based almost altogether upon original material which the writers have made use of for the first time, and whatever value it may have depends in no little measure on this fact. The task of collecting, sifting, and editing the data has been a difficult one, yet one which has fully compensated for the trouble, for in many of the papers and documents yellowed by age there have been discernible the motive forces in the life of a great man. Falling as Mr. Pierce's labors in education did in the period coincident with the beginnings of our statehood, it has been thought desirable as an introduction to his life and work, to offer some preliminary observations concerning our national and local educational inheritances, as well as to sketch briefly the course of Michigan history up to the close of the Territorial days. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Law and a History and Description of the Educational System of Michigan During several years' experience in the school room and in connection with my work as a member and Secretary of the Board of Examiners for this county, I have frequently found myself in need of information concerning the educational system of the State, and have often been called upon by teachers, officers, and others for directions concerning their rights, duties, and responsibilities as defined by the statutes and the common law of the school. In this manner was accumulated a large portion of the data upon which this work is founded. The frequency with which this information is called for and the fact that there is nothing in circulation containing a summary of these matters led to its production. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Handicapped School Children in Michigan First, let us consider \the education of the partially sighted in cities large enough to have a special class before we take up the education of these pupils in the rural districts and in the smaller cities where there are not enough such children to form a special class. From the. Point of view of education, the partially sighted child is one whose vision, even after it has been corrected as far as possible by glasses, is so defective that he cannot read ordinary print at all or without injury to vision, yet is able to read large print. The classes that have. Been formed for such children in the public schools are commonly known as conservation of Vision classes or sight saving classes. The latter name is preferable. In selecting pupils for a sight saving class there evidently is little difficulty in finding the child whose vision is so defective that he cannot even with glasses read ordinary print. The problem is to discover those pupils who are able to read print of ordinary size; yet in so doing are straining their eyes. Half the pupils in the sight saving classes of Cleveland are myopes.
