Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Heritage of Hope: A History of First Baptist Church, Wilmington, North Carolina, 1808-2008 Heritage and Hope is more than just a campaign slogan. Like the early Hebrew people who drew strength from the reminder that the God they worshipped and depended upon for life was the same One who was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, this newest generation of Wilmingtonians who call First Baptist Church their spiritual home tell stories, myths and legends of matriarchs and patriarchs who made decisions and sacrifices that shaped the church into what it is today. Important questions that must be asked are, Are the stories true? Are all the facts of the stories told? What are the stories that are not told? Why aren't some stories told? Behold a spectacle, the like of which, no doubt, no other community in our national life can boast: Two sentinels and guardians of Christian democracy standing watch over the welfare of our state, bi-racial in origin, continuous in good will and brotherly kindness in separation, climactic in the observance of its nativity. This is the day of great rejoicing and praise to Him who has brought us thus far on our way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the First Baptist Church, 1825-1968 The history of the First Baptist Church of High Point, North Carolina, represents one hundred forty three years of existence, which we have divided into four periods. The members of this committee have searched diligently for accurate information; but due to the long span of time and missing records and facts, it has been impossible to include the names of all who served faithfully through the years. As we delved deeper and deeper, we became intrigued by the courage of the consecrated few who so Steadfastly supported the Baptist work, many times against opposition and at personal sacrifice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While religious diversity is often considered a recent phenomenon in America, the Cape Fear region of southeastern North Carolina has been a diverse community since the area was first settled. Early on, the region and the port city of Wilmington were more urban than the rest of the state and thus provided people with opportunities seldom found in other parts of North Carolina. This area drew residents from many ethnic backgrounds, and the men and women who settled there became an integral part of the region's culture. Set against the backdrop of national and southern religious experience, A Coat of Many Colors examines issues of religious diversity and regional identity in the Cape Fear area. Author Walter H. Conser Jr. draws on a broad range of sources, including congregational records, sermon texts, liturgy, newspaper accounts, family memoirs, and technological developments to explore the evolution of religious life in this area. Beginning with the story of prehistoric Native Americans and continuing through an examination of life at the end of twentieth century, Conser tracks the development of the various religions, denominations, and ethnic groups that call the Cape Fear region home. From early Native American traditions to the establishment of the first churches, cathedrals, synagogues, mosques, and temples, A Coat of Many Colors offers a comprehensive view of the religious and ethnic diversity that have characterized Cape Fear throughout its history. Through the lens of regional history, Conser explores how this area's rich religious and racial diversity can be seen as a microcosm for the South, and he examines the ways in which religion can affect such diverse aspects of life as architecture and race relations.

Although we face a new world and a new program, with out precedent to guide us, our yesterdays will aid us great ly to enter successfully into tomorrow. The light of the past will help show us the best path for the future. Just as this history is like a ladder with each pastor as a rung rungs of equal rather than ascending importance so the days of our future history may well form the ladder that leads the church into greater success and significance in the Master's Kingdom. Our wealth of tomorrow depends upon our deposits today. Yesterday we lived in anticipa tion of tomorrow-a tomorrow with adequate buildings and people and ministry. While we may be tempted to live on yesterday's dreams which have become today's realities, let us shun the temptation and move forward and upward upon the rungs of the great spiritual ladder which our great Creator has placed before us. May the joys and de lights of those who pen our history seventy-five years hence be as great as have been ours as we have penned the history of those who have preceded us.
