Book excerpt: The North Carolina 28th Infantry Regiment was organized and mustered into Confederate service in September, 1861, at High Point, North Carolina. Its members were from the counties of Surry, Gaston, Catawba, Stanley, Montgomery, Yadkin, Orange, and Cleveland. The unit moved to New Bern and arrived just as the troops were withdrawing from that fight. Ordered to Virginia in May, 1862, it was assigned to General Branch's and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It fought at Hanover Court House and many conflicts of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. The 28th was then involved in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox operations. It came to Virginia with 1,199 men, lost thirty-three percent of the 480 engaged during the Seven Days' Battles, and had 3 killed and 26 wounded at Cedar Mountain and 5 killed and 45 wounded at Second Manassas. The regiment reported 65 casualties at Fredericksburg and 89 at Chancellorsville. Of the 346 in action at Gettysburg, more than forty percent were killed, wounded, or missing. Its members were recruited in the counties of Iredell, Alexander, Cabarrus, Rowan, New Hanover, Mecklenburg, Nash, and Wake. The unit took an active part in the fight at New Bern, and then advanced to Virginia. It was assigned to General Branch's, Law's, and Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. There were 37 killed and 127 wounded at Chancellorsville, and of the 291 in action at Gettysburg, thirty-one percent were disabled. It lost 5 killed, 62 wounded, and 37 missing at the Wilderness, and 11 killed and 28 wounded at Spotsylvania. On February 26, 1865, the unit was ordered to North Carolina where it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 13 officers and 139 men. A detachment surrendered at Appomattox with 1 officer and 18 men.

Book excerpt: The companies which made up the 28th Alabama Regiment were formed during the first three months of 1862 at Shelby Springs, Alabama on March 29th. Shelby Springs is located about half way between Calera and Columbiana in Shelby County. Originally, it was a vacation spot for the wealthy planters and plantation owners to enjoy the warm springs. In 1862, Camp Winn was established at Shelby Springs and the 28th Infantry Regiment received their training here. They were first assigned to Jackson's Brigade, but a few days later the regiment was made part of the newly formed Trapier's Brigade, Wither's Division. The new Brigade was made up of the 28th Alabama, 44th Mississippi (Blythe's Regiment), 10th and 19th South Carolina and Water's Alabama Battery. Later the 44th Mississippi was replaced by the 34th Alabama Regiment and the 24th Alabama joined the brigade at Tullahoma, Tennessee during November 1862. Arthur Manigault of South Carolina assumed command of the brigade. The 28th continued throughout the war with the Army of Tennessee. The 28th Alabama was a part of the first troops to reach Spring Hill, TN on November 29th, 1864. On November 30th, with only part of the army available, General Hood ordered them into battle. Some 18,000 men moved forward over a mile and a half of bluegrass fields. 6,000 men were either killed, wounded or captured at the Battle of Franklin. During these two final engagements of 1864 the 28th Alabama lost severely in men killed, wounded and captured. Early in 1865 one last effort was made by the south, General Johnston was brought back from retirement to once again command the army. His plan was to stop Union General Sherman's invasion of the Carolinas. At this time the 28th Alabama was in route across Alabama and Georgia to North Carolina to join General Johnston. Before ever reaching Johnston, his efforts were defeated at Bentonville, North Carolina. On March 10th, the day after General Lee's surrender to General Grant at Appomattox, the 28th Alabama was consolidated with the 24th and 34th Alabama Regiments retaining the numbers and colors of the 24th. On March 31st, the 28th Alabama rejoined its brigade at Smithfield. Unaware of Lee's surrender, the regiment marched toward Greensboro, North Carolina. As they advanced it became clear that the end had come. They finally surrendered at Greensboro on April 26th, 1865. Companies Of The Alabama 28th Infantry Regiment Co. "A," Perry County: W. It was mustered into service at Camp Stevens, near Griffin in September 1861. Colonel T. J. Worthen originally commanded the regiment. The regiment transferred to Richmond, Virginia by November and was subsequently ordered to Manassas Junction. There many men were lost due to disease in the winter of 1861-1862. The 28th was first engaged at Yorktown on April 20, 1862. It continued throughout the next year in Virginia, then was transferred to South Carolina in the summer of 1863, missing Gettysburg, but participating in Battery Wagner and Ocean Pond (Olustee) before returning to Virginia. At the end of the war the regiment was sent to North Carolina, fighting its final battles at Bentonville where it was surrendered with Johnston's troops. Book excerpt: The North Carolina 42nd Infantry Regiment was organized at Salibury, North Carolina, in April, 1862. The men were recruited in the counties of Davidson, Rowan, Stanly, Davie, and Mecklenburg. The 42nd followed an unusual path through the war. They missed the early battles in Virginia and Getttysburg, then were in Virginia for the later battles of 1863 and 1864, but returned to North Carolina and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.In June, 1862 it moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, and guarded prisoners captured in Jackson's Valley Campaign. Later the unit served in North Carolina at Tarboro, along the Chowan River, and at Wilmington. Assigned to General Martin's and Kirkland's Brigade, it fought at Cold Harbor, took its place in the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war with the Army of Tennessee.The regiment arrived at Bentonville on 18 March, and spent the night without fires and under orders to remain quiet. Company K consisted of 4 officers, the First Sergeant and 24 privates (numbers approximate) On 19 March, the 42nd NCT, as part of the brigade, covered the deployment of the Johnson's army at Bentonville. Returning to the division line of battle, near the center of the Confederate position, the brigade helped repulse the early Federal attacks, and participated in the Confederate assault on the Morgan's division of the XIV Corps. On 20 March, Kirkland's Brigade successfully defended from its hasty entrenchments on the division's right (just south of the "Devil's Racepath"), then withdrew with the army to the north on 22 March. Company K, 42nd NCT reported no losses at Bentonville. The brigade passed through Raleigh on 11 April, Durham on 13 April, marching on through Chapel Hill west toward High Point. By 26 April, the 42nd NCT was with Kirkland's Brigade at Center Church in Randolph County, three miles from High Point, where it was disbanded on 2 May.Company "A"-Capt. Jacob H. McDowell's Battalion was increased to a Regiment about Oct. 8, 1862, and designated the 60th Regt. N.C. Infantry It was assigned to Preston's, Stovall's, Reynolds', Brown's and Reynolds' Consolidated, and Palmer's Brigade. The 60th fought at Murfreesboro, served in Mississippi, then participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Bentonville. The 60th North Carolina lost 3 killed, 65 wounded, and 11 missing at Murfreesboro, and in January, 1863, had 276 men present for duty. The unit reported 8 killed, 36 wounded, and 16 missing of the 150 engaged at Chickamauga, totalled 106 men and 59 arms in December, 1863, and mustered a force of 106 in January, 1865. It, along with the 18th was created as the last of the units formed in 1861 and did not participate in the early deployment. The 19th was involved the reorganization of the troops in the spring of 1862. They then moved to Mississippi, then to Kentucky where it saw action at Munfordsville. The 19th served with the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, fought with Hood in Tennessee, and was active in the South Carolina Campaign and the North Carolina operations. The regiment lost 8 killed and 72 wounded at Murfreesboro, and the 10th/19th sustained 236 casualties at Chickamauga and totaled 436 men and 293 arms in December, 1863. During the Atlanta Campaign, July 22-28, the 19th reported 12 killed, 60 wounded, and 25 missing, and there were 9 killed, 34 wounded, and 8 missing at Ezra Church. It surrendered on April 26, 1865, with 76 men.

The regiment was organized in early 1865 and participated in the Carolina's campaign. It surrendered as part of the Army of TN at Durham Station, Orange Co, NC April 26, 1865. As the name implies, the Senior Reserves were made up of older men and men who were unfit to serve in the regular army. Unlike the militia and "home guards" however, these men were in actual Confederate Service acting primarily as provost guards, railroad guards and operators, and pickets at bridges and forts.The 4th Senior Reserves served as mounted patrol guard for the Northwester North Carolina counties.
