It spent the early part of the War in central Tennessee, missing the battles preceding and including Vicksburg, but were actively engaged in the pursuit of General Bragg, the Battle of Perryville and the Battle of Stone's River. It then joined the 14th Army Corps and fought at Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Carolina's Campaign. It was then ordered to Washington, D. C., via Richmond, Virginia, April 29-May 20 and Grand Review May 24. The regiment moved to Louisville, Kentucky in June, and there mustered out July 15 1865. The Regiment lost during service 9 Officers and 147 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 254 Enlisted men by disease. Total 411. It left the state Sept. 7, and reported at St. Louis, where it joined Fremont's forces in the campaign to Springfield. It returned to Sedalia and engaged in railroad guard duty until July, 1862, when it moved with the army into southern Missouri, engaging in the battles at Newtonia, Prairie Grove, Ark., and Van Buren.The 26th was then engaged in the siege of Vicksburg, Afterwards, it went up the Yazoo river in July, recaptured Yazoo City, was stationed at Port Hudson after its surrender, and subsequently at Carrolton, La. The regiment was engaged at Stirling's Plantation, near Morganza, where it was defeated and had almost half its force captured, the prisoners being taken to Tyler, Tex., and held for many months.The regiment reenlisted Feb. 1, 1864, and was on a furlough during April. It returned to the field in Louisiana on June 1, and was assigned to garrison duty at Fort Butler, where it remained until the spring of 1865. On Feb. 18, 1865, the recruits of the 60th regiment were transferred to the 26th, and the regiment was ordered to Mobile in March as part of the 16th corps, participating in the siege and assault upon Spanish Fort. It concentrates upon these Hoosiers' three-and-a-half years of duty in the Trans-Mississippi Theater and Gulf states during the Civil War, often as a separate command. They acted as infantry, cavalry and light artillery (with captured cannons) before being converted to heavy artillery in 1863. Their cannons and artillery equipment were hauled by hundreds of mules. The regiment participated in the taking of New Orleans, securing an important rail link to Morgan City, Louisiana, the Teche Campaign, the siege and reduction of Port Hudson, the Red River Campaign, and sieges and reductions of Fort Gaines, Fort Morgan, Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, Alabama.

Book excerpt: The 54th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry consolidated at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg, PA during August and September of 1861 following President Abraham Lincoln's second call for volunteers. Colonel Jacob M. Campbell of Johnstown, PA was commissioned to lead the regiment. On February 26, 1862 the regiment received its colors from Governor Andrew Curtin and then headed off to war. Their first assignment was to guard a portion of the B&O Railroad between Martinsburg, VA (WV) and Cumberland, MD. They maintained this assignment until January of 1863 when the regiment was assigned to the 1st Division, 8th Corps, Department of Western Virginia. However, they saw limited action until 1864 when Major General Franz Sigel took command and went on the offensive up the Shenandoah Valley culminating in the Battle of New Market. This was followed by Major General David Hunter's offensive that attempted to bring the valley to its knees. Finally, the regiment took part in Major General Phil Sheridan's offensive that drove the Confederates out of the Shenandoah for good following the Battle of Cedar Creek. With the valley firmly in Union hands, the regiment was transferred to the Independent Division, 24th Corps, Army of the James. There the men participated in the fighting around Petersburg, VA and finally towards Appomattox, VA until captured en masse at the Battle of High Bridge. The regiment was mustered out of service on July 15, 1865.
