Book excerpt: The 1st Alabama Cavalry (Beall's) Battalion was consolidated with the 2nd Mississippi and Alabama Cavalry (Brewer's) Battalion and Co. "K," 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion; redesignated 8th Confederate Cavalry (Wade's) Regiment in May 1862. The 8th Confederate Cavalry Regiment was made up of men from Alabama and Mississippi. It was also known as the 2nd Regiment, Mississippi & Alabama Cavalry and Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry. Formerly: Beall's Battalion, Alabama Cavalry, Brewer's Battalion Alabama Cavalry Mississippi 4th Cavalry Battalion (Baskerville's). In records of the Battle of Shiloh it is called "Alabama and Mississippi Battalion Confederate Cavalry." Previous to that it was called "Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry," and even then contained at least one Alabama company...that of the McCaa Rangers from Pickens County. The regiment fought at Shiloh, Blackland, Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Chickamauga, protracted engagement near Dalton on May 1864, Dalton/ Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro, Stoneman's Raid, Wheelers raid into Tennessee, Saltville, Montgomery during Wilsons Alabama Raid, and the pursuit of Sherman into the Carolinas. The regiment was split in 1864 explaining what appears to be a conflict...all companies except F, G, and H are found on the list of parolees in North Carolina. Book excerpt: The Alabama 8th (Hatch's) Cavalry Regiment was organized at Newbern, Alabama, in April, 1864, by adding one company to the nine of Hatch's Battalion that had entered Confederate service the previous winter. The men were form Sumter, Dallas, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Marengo, Choctaw, and Fayette counties. It joined General Pillow at Blue Mountain, then was assigned to C. G. Armistead's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The 8th moved into north Georgia and was engaged in the desperate encounter at Lafayette, with a loss of 30 killed and wounded and about 75 prisoners. Shortly after, the Eighth fought at Rome, losing about 20 men killed and wounded. It was ordered to west Florida soon after, and was in front of Steele as he moved on Pollard. In December, on receiving news of a Federal expedition from Pensacola to Pollard, Ala., Colonel Armistead moved his brigade to Bluff Springs, a march of 150 miles in fifty-four hours, and pursued the expedition on its return, December 16-17, General McKean, commanding at Pensacola, reported that "considerable severe fighting took place at all the streams from the Little Escambia to Pine Barren Creek." Colonel Robinson, commanding the expedition, was severely wounded, and in his troops 17 killed and 64 wounded. The 8th surrendered at Gainesville, Florida in late May, 1865. Clemens, Michigan, December 30, 1862 to May 2, 1863. Early in the war they had the distinction of being the unit who captured Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his men. They later participated in the Atlanta Campaign and were a part of the ill-fated Stoneman's Raid to Macon, Ga. Though most of the men escaped when Stoneman was captured, they were surprised and severely beaten at Eatonton, GA. More than 50 of the men who were captured later died in Andersonville Prison. Those who survived continued in the Nashville Campaign and ended the war there doing scouting duty until September, 1865. Book excerpt: The Missouri 2nd Cavalry Regiment was made up mostly of former Missouri State Guard soldiers from the 1st, 6th, and 8th divisions. Members of the 2nd Regiment of the Missouri Confederate Cavalry enrolled between 1 January and 1 March 1862. The 2nd Missouri Cavalry was the only Missouri cavalry unit east of the Mississippi River to serve mounted. They accompanied Brigadier General Frank C. Armstrong into Alabama in July 1862They were mustered between 20 February and 2 July 1862. The regiment spent most of 1863 fighting in Tennessee and northern Mississippi. In January 1864, the regiment began service under Nathan Bedford Forrest. The participated in the successful attack on Okolona, Mississippi, where they captured six artillery pieces and thirty-three flags. In April, the regiment was involved in the attack on Fort Pillow, Tennessee, where they were among the first to storm the fortifications. During the summer of 1864, the regiment fought at Tupelo and participated in the Memphis Raid. The 2nd Missouri Cavalry was transferred to service around Mobile in the fall of 1864, where it scouted and skirmished with Union forces around Mobile and western Florida. The unit skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky, then fought with J. H. Morgan, Most of its men were captured at Buffington Island on July 19, 1863, and the rest at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. In their short term of service, Morgan's Men became legendary for their "Morgan's Raid" behind Union lines into Indiana. The Battle of Corydon occurred on July 9, 1863 when 450 members of the Harrison County Home Guard attempted to delay General John Hunt Morgan's 2,400 Confederate soldiers from advancing through the North. Morgan's Raid began near Sparta in eastern Tennessee on June 11, 1863 and ended near New Lisbon, Ohio on July 26, 1863 with the capture of Morgan. The intent of the raid was to divert the attention of the Union Army of Ohio from Confederate forces in Tennessee. General Braxton Bragg commanded Morgan to stay in Kentucky and not to cross the Ohio River, but for some reason Morgan defied this command. Morgan led his cavalrymen on a 46 day 1,000 mile raid through Indiana and Ohio. Ordered to Virginia, the unit arrived at Huntersville July 21, 1861 with 887 men. It was placed in Brigadier General Daniel S. Donelson's Brigade, along with the 16th Tennessee, and the 1st and 14th Georgia Regiments. The 8th and 16th Tennessee Regiments served in the same brigade organizations throughout the war. As part of this brigade it participated in the Cheat Mountain Campaign. After the Cheat Mountain failure, the 8th and 16th, Donelson's Brigade were sent to Port Royal, South Carolina, arriving December 16, 1861. The 8th was in a skirmish at Port Royal Ferry January 1, 1862. April 10, 1862, Donelson's Brigade, 1572 men, was ordered to Corinth, Mississippi, and in May the brigade consisted of the 2nd, 8th, 15th, 16th and 154th Tennessee Infantry Regiments, and Carnes' Tennessee Battery. The 8th Tennessee continued throughout the remainder of the war with the Army of Tennessee, participating in all the major battles and the Atlanta Campaign. After the Battle of Nashville, December 15-16, 1864, the 8th joined General Joseph E. Johnston, in North Carolina, and was surrendered and paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, as part of the 1st Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Soon after his appointment, Cumberland Gap was evacuated by the Federal forces, and the regiment was recruited at other points. The 8th fought in the Atlanta Campaign, losing most severely at Utoy Creek. They participated in the pursuit of Hood into Tennessee and participated in the battles of Nashville and Franklin, ending the war in North Carolina.
