Book Scarab Symbolism of the Ancient World

Download or read book Scarab Symbolism of the Ancient World written by Norah Romney and published by DTTV PUBLICATIONS. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scarabaeus symbol embodied an elevated religious idea in ancient Egypt, encompassing the Soul's future life, its resurrection from the grave, and most likely its reward or punishment in the next life, depending on its conduct. From the earliest historical knowledge about Ancient Egypt, scarabaeus models pre-existed as symbols of new life and the future eternal life of the triumphant or justified dead. There is an inscription on the lid of the coffin of Men-Kau-Ra, king of the fourth Memphite Dynasty (circa 3633-3600 B.C.) and builder of the Third Pyramid at Giza, confirms that many of the most elevated conceptions of the Per-em-hru, also known as the Book of the Dead, were accepted as truths. During this early period of Osiris' life, the dead One became a living being. In most cases, it predates Mena, the first king of Egypt in history. Based on our current understanding of ancient Egypt's history and thought, it is impossible to predict when his period existed. There is no information available about the indigenous people of Egypt. It is certain that the group known as the Egyptian originated in Asia and was Caucasian in origin. The invader arrived in the Valley of the Nile with an elevated form of religious belief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facsimile edition of the 1974 reissue of Flinders Petrie’s 1917 pioneering typological catalog of Egyptian name-scarabs and cylinders, one of a number of such catalogs to be reissued in this new series. The beetle form of amulets are common finds on Egyptian sites but examples with engraved names represent a small proportion of the total. Over 240 different royal persons are named among the various major museum collections. Petrie here illustrates and discusses over 1600 examples in his own collection together with a selection of inscribed steatite cylinders. He discusses the religious aspects of scarabs and their magical use, their varieties, materials and manufacture, and presents a chronological discussion with fully illustrated catalog of both line drawings and photographs.

Book The Political Situation in Egypt During the Second Intermediate Period C 1800 1550 B C

Download or read book The Political Situation in Egypt During the Second Intermediate Period C 1800 1550 B C written by K. S. B. Ryholt and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Intermediate Period designates the 250 year period (18001550 BC) which separates the two glorious periods of the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom. During the 19th century BC, an invasion by Caanite tribes into the Delta took place. Around 1800 BC these people proclaimed their own king and the Delta thus became independent from the rest of Egypt. Egypt remained split between the Canaanitic rulers in North and the native Egyptian Kings in the South for the rest of the Second Intermediate Period. The division of Egypt brought about an economic decline, and the entire period is characterized by a lack of royal monuments. This circumstance has greatly hampered any attempts to establish a chronology of the period, and as a consequence it has been very difficult to date many sources which are relevant for the social and political situation of the period. The Second Intermediate Period has therefore remained one of the most obscure periods of Egypt's ancient history. The dissertation is a new attempt to establish a chronology for the Second Intermediate Period and define the different kingdoms, their territories and political relations. The study consists of four main chapters, three appendixes, a catalogue of sources, bibliography and indices. Included is a catalogue of all the historical sources, about 1500, known to certify the names of the Egyptian kings of the Second Intermediate Period. Each source is described in terms of type, origin and present location, followed by bibliographical references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scarab is the single most abundant artifact to have survived from ancient Egypt and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, were made throughout the course of Egyptian history. Today, scarabs continue to be found on excavations throughout Egypt and thousands reside in museum collections around the world. This volume examines these ubiquitous and important artifacts by first considering the unique biology and behavior of the scarab beetle and its incorporation into Egyptian symbolism, religion and art. The development of the scarab amulet is then considered, and the many types of scarab produced by the Egyptians are surveyed. Two particularly important classes of scarab - the heart scarab and the commemorative scarab - are examined in detail. Finally, the export of Egyptian scarabs and their imitation by the nations around Egypt is examined as a tangible mark of the extent of Egypt's influence in the ancient world and of the importance of the scarab itself.
