Book excerpt: In May 1968, as part of cutbacks to the British Army, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) was disbanded at a moving ceremony held at the same spot in Douglas in Lanarkshire at which it had been raised in 1689. And yet, although the regiment is no more, its place in history is unassailable. The ceremony embraced the history of one regiment, The Cameronians, which had its origins in the turbulent period that accompanied the rise of the House of Orange at the end of the seventeenth century, while its other component part - the 90th (Perthshire Light Infantry) - was raised as a light infantry regiment during the war against Revolutionary France. Following amalgamation in 1881, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) quickly built up a solid reputation as a fighting regiment. During the First World War it raised 27 battalions and during the Second World War its battalions served in Europe and Burma. In the course of its long history, the regiment provided the British Army with many distinguished soldiers including three field marshals: Viscounts Hill and Wolseley and Sir Evelyn Wood. Always tough and enduring in battle, it reflected the character of its main recruitment area - Glasgow and Lanarkshire - and in later years it took self-conscious pride when the Germans nicknamed its soldiers Giftzwerge, or poison dwarfs. The Cameronians puts its story into the context of British military history and makes use of personal testimony to reveal the life of the regiment.

This book was released on 2025-01-21 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flags are an important part of the military history of colonial America. Not only are they essential artifacts that help reconstruct battles and wars and the stories of various regiments, but they are also vivid, colorful, evocative visual depictions of wars from an era before photography. In this meticulously researched book, military flag expert Steven W. Hill displays and explains the flags of the regiments which fought in North America in the French and Indian War and the American War of Independence. Comprehensive and in-depth, Battle Flags of the Wars for North America, 1754–1783: Foreign Armies and Regiments covers the regimental flags of the major combatants in the two major wars for North American in the eighteenth century—flags carried by regiments from Britain, France, Germany, and Spain. This has long been a subject surrounded by myth, legend, and inaccuracy; the last “standard” work is more than forty years old. Hill digs deep to correct old errors and assembles a complete record of the flags, drawing from archives and artifacts, and creates a reference that will stand the test of time—not only during the coming 250th anniversary years, but far beyond.

Download or read book Robert Craufurd The Man the Myth written by Ian Fletcher and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most students of the Peninsular War the name Robert Craufurd evokes images of a battle-hardened martinet, flogging his men across Portugal and Spain, driving them hard and generally taking a tough stance against anything and everything that did not meet with his own strict disciplinarian code. But that is only a partial picture of this most complex character, and it is the other side of Craufurd’s personality that is revealed in this, the first full-length biography to be written in the last hundred years. Craufurd’s letters to his wife are published here for the first time, and they show that he was a far more interesting and varied man in his private life than he appeared to be on campaign. Ian Fletcher follows Craufurd’s controversial career from India, Ireland and South America to the Iberian Peninsula where he achieved immortality as one of Wellington’s finest generals.
