Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections and Researches Made by the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, Vol. 37 A set of letters written by William Johnston, a half-breed Indian, was found among the Schoolcraft papers. These are here printed, together with many interesting and carefully prepared notes by Mr. J. S. Fox, because of their value in connection with the history of the fur trade in the late years of the Territory, and their importance in Indian history and customs. The Territorial Papers, chiefly from the. Schoolcraft collection, are made up of the official correspondence of the governors of the Territory from 1831-1886. They deal with early politics, Indian questions, the Ohio and Michigan boundary, elections and appointments. These have also been annotated by Mr. Fox. The Bond Papers are more miscellaneous in character, being letters gathered from several sources, giving touches of local color, official com missions, customs reports, and lighthouse gossip. References to the dis satisfaction felt under the rule of Hull and Woodward are found in these letters as are also personal allusions to characters of minor importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Michigan, Vol. 2: As a Province, Territory, and State, the Twenty-Sixth Member of the Federal Union This History of "Michigan as a Territory" makes no claim to any new discovery of materials of history. It is a compilation of material derived from many sources, but never before brought together in its present form. The sources have been to a large extent the public official documents of the state and nation, which are open to all. As the territory was at all times subject to Federal legislation, careful search has been made throughout the "Annals of Congress" and the "Debates of Congress" covering the territorial period, to collate such legislation as seemed to directly affect the territory. The "American State Papers" have also been freely drawn upon for treaties - especially treaties with the Indians. The first period, from 1783 to 1796, is emphatically a period of Treaties and Ordinances, connected with the great northwest, out of which Michigan was carved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Presented to the English Library of the University of Michigan It necessary to make a stand against the en croachments of black bile. Let it be noted that this adversary of the atrabilious was himself the author of The Philosophy of Melancholy and, if Jefferson Hogg's probably exaggerated gossip may be trusted, had posed among his friends as one (platonically) enamoured of suicide. But set a thief to catch a thief. N othing could exceed the sanity of Peacock's pro_test against pessimism except its humour: and it certainly was not nu called for. Wordsworth, indeed, was a grand example of a thoroughly healthy minded author; but his influence had as yet only affected the higher minds. Three years before the publication of Nightmare Abbey, an almost perennial spring of the purest, soundest, most thoroughly genial and most thoroughly objective literature that the world had seen since Homer had been unsealed by the publication of Waverley, but Scott's merits were never adequately recognised by Peacock.
