Book Historic Cities of the Islamic World

Download or read book Historic Cities of the Islamic World written by C. Edmund Bosworth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-08-31 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains articles on historic cities of the Islamic world, ranging from West Africa to Malaysia, which over the centuries have been centres of culture and learning and of economic and commercial life, and which have contributed much to the consolidation of Islam as a faith and as a social and political institution. The articles have been taken from the second edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam, completed in 2004, but in many cases expanded and rewritten. All have been updated to include fresh historical information, with note of contemporary social developments and population statistics. The book thus delineates the urban background of Islam has it has evolved up to the present day, highlighting the role of such great cities as Cairo, Istanbul, Baghdad and Delhi in Islamic history, and also brings them together in a rich panorama illustrating one of mankind's greatest achievements, the living organism of the city.

Book The International Handbook of the Demography of Race and Ethnicity

Download or read book The International Handbook of the Demography of Race and Ethnicity written by Rogelio Sáenz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining key countries in every region of world, this handbook presents population profiles and analyses concerning racial/ethnic disparities and changing intergroup relations. Inside, prominent scholars from various parts of the world and disciplines address the links between stratification, demography, and conflict across the globe. Organized by region/continent, coverage for each profiled country includes demographic information; a historical overview that addresses past racial/ethnic conflict; identification of the most salient demographic trends and issues that the country faces; theoretical issues related to the linkages between stratification, demography, and conflict; methodological issues including quality of data and cutting-edge methods to better understand the issue at hand; and details on the possible future of the existing trends and issues with particular emphasis on public policy and human rights. This handbook will help readers to better understand the commonalities and differences that exist globally in the interplay between stratification, demography, and conflict. In addition, it also provides an excellent inventory of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches that are needed to better comprehend this issue. This handbook will appeal to students, researchers, and policy analysts in the areas of race and ethnic relations, demography, inequality, international sociology, international relations, foreign studies, social geography, and social development.

Book An Iranian Town in Transition

Download or read book An Iranian Town in Transition written by Christoph Werner and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Iranian Town in Transition deals with the social and economic history of Tabriz, a town in north-west Iran and the centre of the historical province Azerbaijan. The focus of this study is on the notables of the town in an epoch of fundamental change that stretches from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Far from narrating a simple history of events, the study addresses major questions related to endowments (waqf), the workings of the Shiite judiciary, urban and provincial administration, the changing role of the 'ulama, and tenure of landed property in concrete case-studies. With its wide perspective on developments in urban society, the study interprets the process of social change in the transitional period from the Zands to the Qajars as a crucial starting point for the modern history of Iran. Stressing the importance of indigenous sources for this period, the author drew heavily on hitherto neglected Persian archival material. A large number of documents, deeds, and court protocols are included in critical edition in the appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be immensely helpful to those who wish to orient themselves to what has become a very large body of literature on medieval Islamic history. Combining a bibliographic study with an inquiry into method, it opens with a survey of the principal reference tools available to historians of Islam and a systematic review of the sources they will confront. Problems of method are then examined in a series of chapters, each exploring a broad topic in the social and political history of the Middle East and North Africa between A.D. 600 and 1500. The topics selected represent a cross-section of Islamic historical studies, and range from the struggles for power within the early Islamic community to the life of the peasantry. Each chapter pursues four questions. What concrete research problems are likely to be most challenging and productive? What resources do we possess for dealing with these problems? What strategies can we devise to exploit our resources most effectively? What is the current state of the scholarly literature for the topic under study?

Book Politics Poetry and Sufism in Medieval Iran

Download or read book Politics Poetry and Sufism in Medieval Iran written by Chad Lingwood and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Politics, Poetry, and Sufism in Medieval Iran Chad Lingwood offers new insights into the political significance of poetry and Sufism at the court of Sulṭān Ya‘qūb (d. 896/1490), leader of the Āq Qoyūnlū. The basis of the study is Salāmān va Absāl, a Persian allegorical romance ‘Abd al-Raḥmān Jāmī (d. 898/1492), the great Timurid belletrist and Naqshbandi Sufi, dedicated to Ya‘qūb. Lingwood demonstrates that Salāmān va Absāl, which modern critics have dismissed as ‘crude’ and ‘grotesque,’ is a sophisticated work of political and mystical advice for a Muslim ruler. In the process, he challenges received wisdom concerning Jāmī, the Āq Qoyūnlū, and Perso-Islamic advice literature. Significantly, the study illustrates the extent to which Jāmī’s compositions integrated the Timurid and Āq Qoyūnlū realms.
