Each year in the history of this society since its organization has brought to us valuable (papers that have secured to us important history relating to this State, which have been secured to posterity through these annual publications. The collections of the past year have been no excep tion and the material of this volume is but an additional proof of the value of this society in procuring and distributing to our public libraries a history of the earlier days of our State that may be made a study for both old and young in all the years to come. Among other interesting matter here offered we desire to call particular attention to the life of Senator Lucius Lyon, found at page 404, and also to letters written bv him, commencing at page 412. These letters contain a history within themselves, that are beyond value to the student of State affairs. The society is under many obligations to Mr. L. G. Stuart, who gave time and expense to secure these letters. The paper found at pages 341 and 840, relating to the bou-ndarv lines of our State, have been carefully prepared from records and maps, and the society is under thany obligations to Miss Anna'h May Soule in giving us the. The Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society has had its period of adversity. Now its officers look forward to an era of prosperity. Systematic and energetic work in its behalf has commenced. In 1897, when legislative support for two years failed through the veto of its appropriation bill by Governor Pingree, the question of continuing or discontinuing its work was seriously discussed; but so much interest was felt in the work that the officers of the society decided to hold the annual meetings at the State Capital for the two moneyless years, and by thus complying with its organic act they kept, it alive for further usefulness. Present interest and progress show that it was a wise decision. The committee of historians, who have general supervision of its publications, take pleasure in calling attention to the work that was done under discouraging conditions; and, furthermore, take pride in saying that a revival of interest in the work assigned by the State to the society, as now organized, is one of the cheerful facts of the present and a hopeful assurance for the future. In each one of the thirty volumes prepared and published by the society, since its organization in 1874 with twenty-two members, there is much valuable historical matter and many interesting pioneer recollections; but in general appearance and careful editing the later volumes are among the very best. One of the charms of this historical collection, aside from its value as a permanent record of events, is the fact that it presents a large and varied amount of information concerning the daily lives and customs of the early settlers of the State, in papers based upon personal experience and observation. Since the general distribution of its volumes among the public libraries of the State has taken place, pursuant to a recent act of the legislature, the excellent work of the society in collecting historical data of the pioneer days of Michigan, is more widely recognized and commended than ever before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Collections: Collection and Researches Made by the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, Vol. 13: Including Reports of Officers and Papers Read at the Annual Meeting of 1888 With the rounding out of another year and the recurrence of the annual meeting of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, it affords gratification to the Committee of Historians to be able to call the attention of the Society and the public generally to two volumes of their "Historical Collections," issued from the press during the twelvemonth just closing. Volume XII. will be found rich in historical matter, consisting as it does of two classes of matter only: one comprising an installment of the papers from the Canadian archives at Ottawa, the other copies of documents in the possession of the old Historical Society at Detroit. The value of both these collections is too well known to need enlargement upon at the present time. The present volume comprises the proceedings of the last annual meeting(1888), together with papers read on that occasion, and other contributions of a miscellaneous nature, embracing many subjects of interest. It will be noticed that some of these contributions have been for some time in the hands of the Committee, awaiting an opportunity for publication, more matter having accumulated than could be immediately utilized. The general historical value of these articles, however, though some local allusions may seem a trifle out of date, was deemed too great to justify their exclusion. The Committee anticipate that the present volume will prove a source of pleasure to the pioneers especially, to whom it will many times recall the experiences of themselves and others during the early days of our commonwealth, while to others it cannot fail to be a source of profit as illustrative of times and events of which the present generation can have but little practical conception. A large amount of valuable matter on hand still awaits dissemination by means of printer's ink. The next volume, which it is expected will be promptly issued, will consist almost entirely of Canadian papers relating to the War of 1812, and the Committee feel that all lovers of historical research may justly await its appearance with enthusiastic expectation.
