Book Ancient and Early Medieval Kingdoms of the Pamir Region of Central Asia

Download or read book Ancient and Early Medieval Kingdoms of the Pamir Region of Central Asia written by Muzaffar Zoirshoevich Zoolshoev and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This focused study is one of the few analytical resources in English that covers the ancient and early medieval history of one of the least studied areas of the vast mountainous Pamir region of Central Asia: Shughnān. The book brings together scattered fragments of information from a wide range of early Greek, Chinese, Persian, and Arabic sources, the accounts of early European travellers and the scholarly contributions of Soviet and post-Soviet authors, as well as personal accounts and oral history material from the region. Drawing on historical, archaeological, linguistic, and ethnographic data, it provides a holistic overview of the kingdom of Shughnān. It also attempts, for the first time, to identify and locate the town of Kǔhán, which the Chinese historical chronicle, the Táng Shū (Book of the Tang Dynasty, 618–907 CE) describes as the ‘first capital’ of Shughnān. Many archaeological sites are examined and offered as potential candidates for the location of the town of Kǔhán, providing a foundation for future archaeological and ethnolinguistic research in the area. Ancient and Early Medieval Kingdoms of the Pamir Region of Central Asia: Historical Shughnān and its Lost Capital is suitable for students, scholars, and historians studying ancient and early medieval Central Asia, particularly the Pamir region, as well as those interested in Central Asian history and archaeology more broadly.

Book Pastoral practices in High Asia

Download or read book Pastoral practices in High Asia written by Hermann Kreutzmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In conventional views, pastoralism was classified as a stage of civilization that needed to be abolished and transcended in order to reach a higher level of development. In this context, global approaches to modernize a rural society have been ubiquitous phenomena independent of ideological contexts. The 20th century experienced a variety of concepts to settle mobile groups and to transfer their lifestyles to modern perceptions. Permanent settlements are the vivid expression of an ideology-driven approach. Modernization theory captured all walks of life and tried to optimize breeding techniques, pasture utilization, transport and processing concepts. New insights into other aspects of pastoralism such as its role as an adaptive strategy to use marginal resources in remote locations with difficult access could only be understood as a critique of capitalist and communist concepts of modernization. In recent years a renaissance of modernization theory-led development activities can be observed. Higher inputs from external funding, fencing of pastures and settlement of pastoralists in new townships are the vivid expression of 'modern' pastoralism in urban contexts. The new modernization programme incorporates resettlement and transformation of lifestyles as to be justified by environmental pressure in order to reduce degradation in the age of climate change.

Book Marco Polo

Download or read book Marco Polo written by Laurence Bergreen and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-10-23 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first European to travel extensively throughout Asia, Marco Polo was the earliest bridge between East and West. His famous journeys took him across the boundaries of the known world, along the dangerous Silk Road, and into the court of Kublai Kahn, where he won the trust of the most feared and reviled leader of his day. Polo introduced the cultural riches of China to Europe, spawning centuries of Western fascination with Asia. In this lively blend of history, biography, and travelogue, acclaimed author Laurence Bergreen separates myth from history, creating the most authoritative account yet of Polo's remarkable adventures. Exceptionally narrated and written with a discerning eye for detail, Marco Polo is as riveting as the life it describes.
