Book Not for Filthy Lucre s Sake

Download or read book Not for Filthy Lucre s Sake written by Daniel J. Weeks and published by Lehigh University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries were tumultuous times for New Jersey. The settlers in East New Jersey rose in violent opposition to the proprietary government of the province. Antiproprietary agitators, including Richard Saltar, defied the authority of the province courts, often forcibly breaking up the proceedings and physically assaulting the judges. Daniel J. Weeks reveals that the antiproprietary movement was more than a spontaneous outburst against the perceived oppressions of the proprietors. It was, in fact, a concerted and well-planned effort to overthrow proprietary power in New Jersey and establish a government based on the consent of the majority of the freeholders. The troubles had their roots in the very first days of settlement, after the proprietors, private owners of the land and government, refused to recognize the land patents of the settlers."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Revolutionary Staten Island

Download or read book Revolutionary Staten Island written by Joe Borelli and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Staten Island from early settlements to revolutionary battleground is explored in this local history. The shores of Staten Island were one of the first places Giovanni da Verrazzano and Henry Hudson landed in North America, and they became a safe harbor for thousands of refugees fleeing religious conflicts in Europe. As Dutch Staaten Eylandt and then English Richmond County, the island played a vital role in colonial development of the continent and the American Revolution. Rebel raids along the kills and inlets kept British forces and local Tories constantly battling for position, while Hessian and British troops occupied the island longer than any other county during the war. Staten Island’s strategic location was used to launch counterstrikes against Washington’s forces in New Jersey, while Major General John Sullivan led Continental army troops in defeat at the Battle of Staten Island. Author Joe Borelli reveals the colonial history of Richmond County and its role in the fight for American independence.

Download or read book Kinship and Clientage written by Alison Cathcart and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines Highland society during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries highlighting the extent to which kinship and clientage were organising principles within clanship. Based on clans located in the central and eastern Highlands this study goes some way to addressing the imbalance in Highland historiography which hitherto has concentrated largely on the west Highlands and islands. Focusing initially on internal clan structure, the study broadens into an analysis of local politics within the context of regional and national affairs, raising questions regarding the importance of land and the nature of lordship as well as emphasising the need for Highland history to be integrated further into broader studies of Scottish society during this period.

Book Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North

Download or read book Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North written by Graham Russell Hodges and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the development of a single African American community in eastern New Jersey, Hodges examines the experience of slavery and freedom in the rural north. This unique social history addresses many long held assumptions about the experience of slavery and emancipation outside the south. For example, by tracing the process by which whites maintained "a durable architecture of oppression" and a rigid racial hierarchy, it challenges the notions that slavery was milder and that racial boundaries were more permeable in the north. Monmouth County, New Jersey, because of its rich African American heritage and equally well-preserved historical record, provides an outstanding opportunity to study the rural life of an entire community over the course of two centuries. Hodges weaves an intricate pattern of life and death, work and worship, from the earliest settlement to the end of the Civil War.
