Book Stewart s Genealogical and Historical Miscellany 1918 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stewart s Genealogical and Historical Miscellany 1918 Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Frank H. Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stewart's Genealogical and Historical Miscellany, 1918, Vol. 2 From a book kept by a Doctor who had a large practice in Burlington County, N. J., I copy the following. There were twenty - three sets of twins and one of-triplets. The fee charged is set opposite each entry and varied considerably and probably depended on the wealth of the parents. It ranged from a few Shillings to five pounds. In cases of twins it was his practice to charge no fee. There is nothing to indicate the name of the doctor except two undecipherable initials which may be J. R., J. B., I. R., or I. B. Again I met with surprises when I not only found my ancestors, Joseph Steward, Sr., and his son, Joseph, Jr., and his wife, Ann, and her parents, Nathaniel and Ruth Robins, but also Richard and Elizabeth Kirby, ancestors of my own wife. The doctor must have been prominent and well known and it is quite possible that someone will be able to identify himfrom the initials which not only appear on the tattered cover but also on a leaf of the book. In a few instances I may have made a mis take in interpreting the spelling, but al most without exception I have indicated doubt with a question mark (p). Book THE WOOLVERTON FAMILY 1693 1850 and Beyond Volume II

Download or read book THE WOOLVERTON FAMILY 1693 1850 and Beyond Volume II written by David A. Macdonald and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Woolverton was in Burlington County, New Jersey, by 1693, and appears in records there and in Hunterdon County until 1727. David Macdonald and Nancy McAdams have traced Charles' descendants to the seventh generation, by which time they had spread out to many parts of the country ... This is a beautifully crafted genealogy. The format is easy to follow, and the documentation is impressive. The compilers have carefully explained their handling of problem areas, including the need to refute longstanding family lore about the immigrant ... This is an exemplary work, which descendants will certainly value and other genealogists would be well advised to study. -- Excerpts from a review published in the April 2003 issue of The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record and reprinted with permission of the author, Harry Macy, Jr. and The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.

Book Revolutionary Staten Island

Download or read book Revolutionary Staten Island written by Joe Borelli and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Staten Island from early settlements to revolutionary battleground is explored in this local history. The shores of Staten Island were one of the first places Giovanni da Verrazzano and Henry Hudson landed in North America, and they became a safe harbor for thousands of refugees fleeing religious conflicts in Europe. As Dutch Staaten Eylandt and then English Richmond County, the island played a vital role in colonial development of the continent and the American Revolution. Rebel raids along the kills and inlets kept British forces and local Tories constantly battling for position, while Hessian and British troops occupied the island longer than any other county during the war. Staten Island’s strategic location was used to launch counterstrikes against Washington’s forces in New Jersey, while Major General John Sullivan led Continental army troops in defeat at the Battle of Staten Island. Author Joe Borelli reveals the colonial history of Richmond County and its role in the fight for American independence.

Download or read book Dividing the Faith written by Richard J Boles and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncovers the often overlooked participation of African Americans and Native Americans in early Protestant churches Phillis Wheatley was stolen from her family in Senegambia, and, in 1761, slave traders transported her to Boston, Massachusetts, to be sold. She was purchased by the Wheatley family who treated Phillis far better than most eighteenth-century slaves could hope, and she received a thorough education while still, of course, longing for her freedom. After four years, Wheatley began writing religious poetry. She was baptized and became a member of a predominantly white Congregational church in Boston. More than ten years after her enslavement began, some of her poetry was published in London, England, as a book titled Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. This book is evidence that her experience of enslavement was exceptional. Wheatley remains the most famous black Christian of the colonial era. Though her experiences and accomplishments were unique, her religious affiliation with a predominantly white church was quite ordinary. Dividing the Faith argues that, contrary to the traditional scholarly consensus, a significant portion of northern Protestants worshipped in interracial contexts during the eighteenth century. Yet in another fifty years, such an affiliation would become increasingly rare as churches were by-and-large segregated. Richard Boles draws from the records of over four hundred congregations to scrutinize the factors that made different Christian traditions either accessible or inaccessible to African American and American Indian peoples. By including Indians, Afro-Indians, and black people in the study of race and religion in the North, this research breaks new ground and uses patterns of church participation to illuminate broader social histories. Overall, it explains the dynamic history of racial integration and segregation in northern colonies and states.

Book Manhattan to Minisink

Download or read book Manhattan to Minisink written by Robert S. Grumet and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drivers exiting the New Jersey Turnpike for Perth Amboy, and map readers marveling at all the places in Pennsylvania named Lackawanna, need no longer wonder how these names originated. Manhattan to Minisink provides the histories of more than five hundred place names in the Greater New York area, including the five boroughs, western Long Island, the New York counties north of the city, and parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Robert S. Grumet, a leading ethnohistorian specializing in the region’s Indian peoples, draws on his meticulous research and deep knowledge to determine the origins of Native, and Native-sounding, place names. Grumet divides his encyclopedic entries into two parts. The first comprises an alphabetical listing of nearly 340 Indian place names preserved in colonial records, located by county and state. Each entry includes the name’s language of origin, if known, and a brief discussion of its etymology, including its earliest known occurrence in written records, the history of its appearance on maps, and the name’s current status. The book’s second section presents nearly 200 place names that, though widely believed to be of Indian origin, are “imports, inventions, invocations, or impostors.” Mistranslations are abundant in place names, and Grumet has ferreted out the mistakes and deceptions among home-grown colonial etymologies that New Yorkers have accepted for centuries. Complete with a concise history of Greater New York, a discussion of the region’s naming practices, a useful timeline, and four maps, this is an invaluable resource both for scholars and for readers who want a more intimate knowledge of the place where they live or visit.
