A few years later the relations between the two colonies were further complicated by the expulsion of a large number of Puritans from Virginia and their settlement in Maryland. During the Protectorate, when the hand of Lord Baltimore was powerless, these Puritans quarreled with the Catholics and a state of civil war for some time prevailed.
