Book La Belle the Ship That Changed History

Download or read book La Belle the Ship That Changed History written by Bullock Texas State History Museum and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After two decades of searching for La Salle’s lost ship La Belle, Texas Historical Commission (THC) divers in 1995 located a shipwreck containing historic artifacts of European origin in the silty bottom of Matagorda Bay, off the coast of Texas. The first cannon lifted from the waters bore late seventeenth-century French insignias. The ill-fated La Belle had been found. Under the direction of then-THC Archeology Division Director James Bruseth, the THC conducted a full excavation of the water-logged La Belle. The conservation was subsequently completed at Texas A&M University’s Conservation Research Laboratory, resulting in preservation of more than one million artifacts from the wreck. An official naval vessel granted to La Salle by the king of France in 1684, La Belle is still considered a sovereign naval vessel belonging to the French government under international maritime law. A formal agreement negotiated by the French Republic, the Musée national de la Marine, the US Department of State, and the THC allows the ship and artifacts to remain in Texas permanently and to be housed in an exhibit at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, opening October 2014. This richly illustrated catalog will accompany the exhibit.

Book Great Midwestern Ship Model Museums

Download or read book Great Midwestern Ship Model Museums written by Jack Sintich and published by . This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the little known facts about the great Midwest region of the United States is that it is home to a number of really impressive maritime museums. Great Midwestern Ship Model Museums takes the reader on a journey of discovery through the Maritimes of the Midwest. The book begins at the Ohio River Museum and continues to museums on the Great Lakes, the I & M canal, the Mississippi, and ends on the eastern terminus of the Missouri River. Each of the book's twelve chapters focuses on the most impressive ship models in that museum's collection. The ship models are rare one-of-a-kind and beautifully constructed examples of the model shipwright's art. Each of the specially selected museums have something in the their collection that is quite unique to their region and cannot be found anywhere else in the Midwest. The ship models themselves tell the story of the innovative American work ethic, the spirit, and the legendary contributions made by Midwesterners to America's prosperity. The ship models described in the book range from fourteen-foot long giant models of Great Lakes iron boats, to very small four-inch long models of Missouri River diesel towboats. No matter the scale or size of the ship model, one thing is common and that is the attention to detail by the builder. A number of the ship models described in the book are over one-hundred and twenty years old, some are the only known replica of a particular historic steamboat. This book makes Midwestern maritime history truly come alive. For those interested in discovering the finest examples of the ship modeler's art and beautiful marine oil paintings, Great Midwestern Ship Model Museums will prove to be a treasure of information.
