Download or read book Historic Mackinac Vol 2 of 2 written by Edwin Orin Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Mackinac, Vol. 2 of 2: The Historical, Picturesque and Legendary Features of the Mackinac Country Illustrated From Sketches, Drawings, Maps and Photographs, With an Original Map of Mackinac Island, Made Especially for This Work Volume I of Historic Mackinac is made up largely of data pertaining to the early history of the Mackinac coun try. The charms of Mackinac Island, with its old Fort, its beautiful scenery, pure and healthful air, the delights of its Indian trails, and the romantic legends interwoven with fascinating stories of the fairies, have attracted to its shores many of the most noted authors of their day. They have written of Mackinac, and have brought both fiction and fact into their productions, adding much to America's best literature through the inspiration given them by the richness of Mackinac's store of historical, legendary and picturesque resources. Meredith Nicholson, Charles Major, Edward Everett Hale, Constance Fenimore Wool son, and many other well-known writers, have found here a perfect environment and setting in which to weave their stories of life and of love. The aim has been to bring together and preserve for the reader of today and in years to come, some of the graphic descriptions given by cele brated travellers who visited the Island many years ago. To this end, Volume II is largely a collection of extracts from books long since out of print, all of which will ever hold an important place in the story of the Fairy Isle. Book The Founding Mothers of Mackinac Island

Download or read book The Founding Mothers of Mackinac Island written by Theresa L. Weller and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a wide array of historical sources, Theresa L. Weller provides a comprehensive history of the lineage of the seventy-four members of the Agatha Biddle band in 1870. A highly unusual Native and Métis community, the band included just eight men but sixty-six women. Agatha Biddle was a member of the band from its first enumeration in 1837 and became its chief in the early 1860s. Also, unlike most other bands, which were typically made up of family members, this one began as a small handful of unrelated Indian women joined by the fact that the US government owed them payments in the form of annuities in exchange for land given up in the 1836 Treaty of Washington, DC. In this volume, the author unveils the genealogies for all the families who belonged to the band under Agatha Biddle’s leadership, and in doing so, offers the reader fascinating insights into Mackinac Island life in the nineteenth century.
