Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Days in Cumberland County, New Jersey: 1855 1865; Political and War Time Reminiscences The story of the Civil War and the early days of a great political movement in Cumberland County is a theme of interest to the descendants of the noble men who gave their lives for the Union and those who stood at the cradle of the party of human liberty at a crucial hour in our National history. It appeared to the writer that it was worthy of preservation. To the memory of those who organized the Republican Party in Cumberland County in 1855, and the heroic sons of old Cumberland who volunteered in the war for the preservation of the Federal Union - 1861-1865 - many of whom lie in nameless graves on battlefields once red with patriotic blood, this volume is affectionately dedicated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruited as sharpshooters and clothed in distinctive uniforms with green trim, the hand-picked regiment of the Ninth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry was renowned and admired far and wide. The only New Jersey regiment to reenlist for the duration of the Civil War at the close of its initial three-year term, the Ninth saw action in forty-two battles and engagements across three states. Throughout the South, the regiment broke up enemy camps and supply depots, burned bridges, and destroyed railroad tracks to thwart Confederate movements. Members of the Ninth also suffered disease and starvation as POWs at the notorious Andersonville prison camp in Georgia. Recruited largely from socially conservative cities and villages in northern and central New Jersey, the Ninth Volunteer Infantry consisted of men with widely differing opinions about the Union and their enemy. Edward G. Longacre unearths these complicated political and social views, tracing the history of this esteemed regiment before, during, and after the war—from recruitment at Camp Olden to final operations in North Carolina.

The Lenni-Lenape first populated this region, and during the Revolutionary War, the city sent Patriots like Dr. Jonathan Elmer to lead the struggle for the young republic. The town continued to grow in size and importance through the Victorian era, building everything from roads to taverns to industries. Owens-Illinois Company, Seabrook Farms and Ferracute Machine Company were all business innovators and leaders. Bridgeton has always produced concerned, community oriented citizens who through the years have come together to build the hospital, save the library, rebuild a football stadium and perform countless other civic deeds. Book New Jersey Butterfly Boys in the Civil War

Download or read book New Jersey Butterfly Boys in the Civil War written by Peter T. Lubrecht and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Jersey Butterflies, officially the Third New Jersey Cavalry, was formed for the last year of the Civil War. They were also known as the First American Hussars; their creation by an alcoholic ex-officer of the Union Army was supposed to entice men to join a galloping, dashing, romantic cavalry unit. Clothed in orange gilt trimmed hats and capes, they were supposed to charge armed only with a saber, in most traditional European Cavalry fashion, into battle and subdue an enemy armed with rifles. This book is not about battlefield configurations, but rather about the men themselves. Individual stories from original accounts will examine how this glorious, historically victorious, difficult and often tragic year affected their return to the daily world of doctors, teachers, lawyers, clerks and workmen.
