Download or read book Reminiscences of Charleston Classic Reprint written by J. N. Cardozo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Charleston An absence of tive years from Charleston, a city in which I had mided sixty-ilve years, must have induced many recollections that merit preservation, if they have lctt the traces of some that should be forgotten. The propriety of publishing a volume of Reminiscences embracing so long a tract of time, has been sug gested by some of my friends. There are many things of which nothing but vague tradition retains the memory, and which are rapidly passing into oblivion. To preserve these waifs that are floating on the stream of time - to rescue these fragments may not be worthy of the pen of the historian, but that they should have a local habitation, and, if possible, a permanent record among the memorabilia of lireh-will scarcely admit of dispute. In gathering the materials for, and compiling this volume, and giving it the stamp of authenticity, where my memory has failed me, in recollecting dates, I have sought support for my statements in the better recollection of others. As regards facts, I do not require any such adventitious aid. As time recedes from view, it is a law of nature that recollection brightens with the progress of years, while shadows gather over that which is more recent. Two lines of railroad connect the city With the North and South, and only a few connecting links are wanting to give us three competing lines to the West, and these are being rapidly supplied by energetic men. Our harbor is never frozen; steamers and railroads never obstructed, delaying transportation and increas ing expenses. Book Short Sketch of Charleston S C

Download or read book Short Sketch of Charleston S C written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Sketch of Charleston, S. C: How It Fared in Two Wars and an Earthquake It is related of a young man who was about setting out on his first trip to Europe, that he was so elated as to be hardly able to think or speak of anything else, insomuch that after purchasing certain articles for his journey, he turned away without waiting for his money to be changed. The tradesman called after him: "Sir, you have forgotten your change." "Well, never mind," replied the youngster, dreamily, "you can hand it to me in London." "But," rejoined the dealer, "I am not going to London." "Not going to London!" exclaimed the bewildered youth, "then where on earth are you going?" So of those visiting our Southern States, it is hard to understand "where on earth are you going" if not to Charleston? On this side of the Atlantic one can hardly find a city offering more to interest than Charleston, whether considered historically, socially or physically. History. It is old as cities go in America, its settlement in its present location dating back to 1677, but it was not incorporated under the name of Charleston until 1783. Previously to that it had been called Charles Town, named in honor of the very virtuous king of Great Britain, Charles II., who, by charter in 1663, "was graciously pleased to grant" to certain "Lords Proprietors" a vast region, larger than his own "tight little island," comprising both the Carolinas and a great deal more besides, of whose real extent either he or they knew very little. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a fascinating discussion of religion's role in the rhetoric of American civilizing empire, The Imperial Church undertakes an exploration of how Catholic mission histories served as a useful reference for Americans narrating US settler colonialism on the North American continent and seeking to extend military, political, and cultural power around the world. Katherine D. Moran traces historical celebrations of Catholic missionary histories in the upper Midwest, Southern California, and the US colonial Philippines to demonstrate the improbable centrality of the Catholic missions to ostensibly Protestant imperial endeavors. Moran shows that, as the United States built its continental and global dominion and an empire of production and commerce in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, Protestant and Catholic Americans began to celebrate Catholic imperial pasts. She demonstrates that American Protestants joined their Catholic compatriots in speaking with admiration about historical Catholic missionaries: the Jesuit Jacques Marquette in the Midwest, the Franciscan Junípero Serra in Southern California, and the Spanish friars in the Philippines. Comparing them favorably to the Puritans, Pilgrims, and the American Revolutionary generation, commemorators drew these missionaries into a cross-confessional pantheon of US national and imperial founding fathers. In the process, they cast Catholic missionaries as gentle and effective agents of conquest, uplift, and economic growth, arguing that they could serve as both origins and models for an American civilizing empire. The Imperial Church connects Catholic history and the history of US empire by demonstrating that the religious dimensions of American imperial rhetoric have been as cross-confessional as the imperial nation itself.

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
