Book excerpt: Spanish identity in the age of nations offers the first comprehensive account in any language of the formation and development of Spanish national identity from ancient times to the present. Much has been written on French, British and German nationalism, but remarkably little has been published on Spanish nationalism. Paradoxically, even in Spain there is much more on Basque, Catalan and other regional nationalisms than on Spanish identity. As a result, this study fills an enormous gap in the literature on Spanish history. This book traces the emergence and evolution of an initial collective identity within the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to the end of the ancien regime based on the Catholic religion, loyalty to the Crown and Empire. The adaptation of this identity to the modern era, beginning with the Napoleonic Wars and the liberal revolutions, forms the crux of this study. None the less, the book also embraces the highly contested evolution of the national identity in the twentieth century, including both the Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship. As a consequence, the painter emerges in isolation from the forces that shaped his work. Jonathan Brown offers another approach to the subject by relating important Spanish Baroque paintings and painters to their cultural milieu. A critical survey of the historiography of seventeenth-century Spanish painting introduces this two-part collection of essays. Part One provides the most detailed study to date of the artistic-literary academy of Francisco Pacheco, and Part Two contains original studies of four major painters and their works: Las Meninas of Velázquez, Zurbarán's decoration of the sacristy at Guadalupe, and the work by Murillo and Valdés Leal for the Brotherhood of Charity, Seville. The essays are unified by the author's intention to show how the artists interacted with and responded to the prevailing social, theological, and historical currents of the time. While this contextual approach is not uncommon in the study of European art, it is newly applied here to restore some of the diversity and substance that Spanish Baroque painting originally possessed.

El proceso ha sido acumulativo y enriquecedor, pues con el tiempo se han ido sucediendo los fenómenos susceptibles de ser integrados en esa historia, y esto no sólo como consecuencia de la natural aparición de nuevos artistas en activo, sino también porque la mirada hacia el pasado se ha hecho cada vez mas integradora. Para efectuar el análisis se ha atendido a tres ejes principales: En primer lugar, la historia y la crítica artística, a fin de identificar las principales ideas que a lo largo del tiempo se han puesto en juego. En segundo lugar, las prácticas coleccionísticas y museográficas, las cuales permiten examinar de la manera más adecuada la manifestación y la visualización del concepto de “pintura española” desde el siglo XVII.
