No se puede sustanciar una etapa tan extensa en el tiempo y tan compleja de una forma simple. Sabemos que el nombre de «Edad Media» (A. G. Bussi), contrapuesto al de «Renacimiento» (Vasari), tuvo el sentido de designar un periodo sombrío y bárbaro entre una Antigüedad luminosa y un Renacimiento precursor de la iluminación epocal de la Edad Moderna. La historia del pensamiento ha ido poniendo énfasis en la importancia de este periodo, cuyos protagonistas fueron lectores inteligentes del legado de la filosofía y el pensamiento antiguos, y que como tales no solo no se limitaron a repetir lo que recibieron, sino que lo confrontaron con las novedades propias de sus tiempos –diversos desde los albores de la Edad Media (ss. VI-VIII), hasta el establecimiento de una nueva vía (s. XIV)– y de sus espacios geográficos –del Oriente al Occidente– y mentales-religiosos –la introducción del orden sobrenatural que trae consigo el pensamiento religioso cristiano, musulmán y judío–. El presente manual pretende ser un texto en el que se narra la historia filosófica de este periodo, en sus hitos fundamentales, desde sus contextos y universos mentales, de modo que el lector (normalmente el alumno, pero no solo) pueda cubrir su conocimiento del desarrollo de la historia de la filosofía sin saltos ilógicos y le ayude a entender mejor el desarrollo, profundidad y permanente actualidad de los grandes temas de la filosofía, liberándolo de la tiranía del presente. El texto ha sido realizado con la colaboración de profesores y tutores de la UNED y también la revisión, comentario y discusión de otros profesores que lo han enriquecido: Rafael Ramón Guerrero (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), Vicente Llamas Roig (Instituto Teológico de Murcia-Pontificia Università Antonianum) y Antoni Bordoy (Universitat de les Illes Balears).

Iberian Empires and the Roots of Globalization argues that Iberian empires cannot be viewed apart from early modern globalization. From research sites throughout the early modern Spanish and Portuguese territories and from distinct disciplinary approaches, the essays collected in this volume investigate the economic mechanisms, administrative hierarchies, and art forms that linked the early modern Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Iberian Empires and the Roots of Globalization demonstrates that early globalization was structured through diverse networks and their mutual and conflictive interactions within overarching imperial projects. To this end, the essays explore how specific products, texts, and people bridged ideas and institutions to produce multiple centers within Iberian imperial geographies. Taken as a whole, the authors also argue that despite attempts to reproduce European models, early Iberian globalization depended on indigenous agency and the agency of people of African descent, which often undermined or changed these models. The volume thus relays a nuanced theory of early modern globalization: the essays outline the Iberian imperial models that provided templates for future global designs and simultaneously detail the negotiated and conflictive forms of local interactions that characterized that early globalization. The essays here offer essential insights into historical continuities in regions colonized by Spanish and Portuguese monarchies.

Book excerpt: As the first translator of Plato's complete works into Latin, the Florentine writer Marsilio Ficino (1433-99) and his blend of Neoplatonic and Hermetic philosophy were fundamental to the intellectual atmosphere of the Renaissance. In Spain, his works were regularly read, quoted, and referenced, at least until the nineteenth century, when literary critics and philosophers wrote him out of the history of early modern Spain. In Ficino in Spain, Susan Byrne uses textual and bibliographic evidence to show the pervasive impact of Ficino's writings and translations on the Spanish Renaissance. Cataloguing everything from specific mentions of his name in major texts to glossed volumes of his works in Spanish libraries, Byrne shows that Spanish writers such as Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Bartolomé de las Casas, and Garcilaso de la Vega all responded to Ficino and adapted his imagery for their own works. An important contribution to the study of Spanish literature and culture from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries, Ficino in Spain recovers the role that Hermetic and Neoplatonic thought played in the world of Spanish literature.
