In their response, this elite drew on the Bible and custom, on Roman law and papal letters, in order that the law could encompass all human experience. Book excerpt: The principal motif that runs throughout The Virtual Point of Freedom is a confrontation with the discourse of freedom, or, more specifically, the falsely transgressive ideal of a total emancipation that would know no constraints. Far from delineating a supposed “subject of freedom” that would allegedly overcome alienation once and for all, the seven chapters in Chiesa’s book seek to unfold an innovative reading of the dialectical coincidence between dis-alienation and re-alienation in politics, aesthetics, and religion, using psychoanalysis as a privileged critical tool. Topics include Pier Paolo Pasolini’s attack on the visual and biological degeneration of bodies brought about by pleasure-seeking “liberal” consumerism, Giorgio Agamben’s and Slavoj Žižek’s conflicting negotiations with the Christian tradition of “poverty” and “inappropriateness” as potential redemption, and Alain Badiou’s inability to develop a philosophical anthropology that could sustain a coherent politics of emancipation. The book concludes by sketching out the figure of the partisan, a subject who makes it possible to conceive of an intersection between provisional morality and radical politics.

What does it mean to see comics as art? This book looks at the singular status of comics in the French cultural landscape. Bandes dessinées have long been published in French newspapers and magazines. In the early 1960s, a new standard format emerged: large hardback books, called albums. Albums played a key role in the emergence of the ninth art and its acceptance among other forms of literary narrative. From Barbarella in 1964 to La Ballade de la mer salée in 1975, from Astérix and its million copies to Tintin and its screen versions, within the space of just a few years the comics landscape underwent a deep transformation. The album opened up new ways of creating, distributing, and reading bandes dessinées. This shift upended the market, transformed readership, initiated new transmedia adaptations, generated critical discourse, and gave birth to new kinds of comics fandom. These transformations are analysed through a series of case studies, each focusing on a noteworthy album. By retracing the publishing and critical history of these classic bandes dessinées, this book questions the blind spots of a canon based on the album format and uncovers the legitimisation processes that turned bande dessinée into the ninth art.

Mais ce serait oublier que la réflexion prend bien des chemins et que la littérature est un espace de pensée. Il faudrait, par conséquent, plutôt s’étonner du fait qu'il puisse sembler anormal d'interroger la pensée d’un écrivain. Mais Ie terrain est, il est vrai, miné... Mieux vaut repartir sur des bases modestes et claires, d'après quelques constats. Ainsi, concernant Marivaux, est-il frappant de relever l'importance que tiennent les réflexions dans ses textes. Rien de plus légitime dès lors que de se demander si ces pensées, apparemment décousues, n'entrent pas dans une conception ordonnée du réel et de « l’humanité ». Il ne s’agit pas pour autant d’en revenir à une position simpliste consistant à attribuer à chaque auteur une conception du monde à partir d’un relevé de ses affirmations explicites ou implicites. Plutôt que de se fourvoyer dans un exposé artificiellement complet de la pensée de Marivaux, il paraît plus intéressant de faire quelques pas en direction de ce qui est pensé dans les textes de Marivaux.

François Laydevant, who worked in Lesotho from 1905 to 1954, with a Roman Catholic missiologist, Fr. Albert Perbal, based in Rome, Italy. The exchange of letters was provoked by the missiologist who needed direct information from the mission field for his own research and teaching, and first of all in order to fulfil his role of consultant with the Institute for the Study of African Languages and Cultures in London and the Conference Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique in Rome. The main result of the correspondence, apart from fulfilling the above stated purpose, was to propel Fr. Laydevant into fruitful anthropological, ethnological and historical research into Lesotho and its people. The correspondence deals with many contemporary missiological problems of the time. It is also a primary source for the history of the Church in Lesotho, in particular the Roman Catholic Church. FRENCH TEXT Ce volume comprend la correspondance de vingt-cinq ans d'un missionnaire catholique, le Père François Laydevant, qui travailla au Lesotho de 1905 à 1954, avec un missiologue catholique, le Père Albert Perbal, qui demeurait à Rome. C'est le missiologue qui provoqua l'échange de lettres. Il avait besoin d'information directe à partir du champ missionnaire pour ses recherches et son enseignement et d'abord pour remplir son rôle auprès de l'Institut pour l'Étude des langues et des Cultures Africaines à Londres et auprès de la Conférence Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique à Rome. Le résultat le plus évident de cette correspondance fut de lancer le Père Laydevant dans les recherches ethnologiques, anthropologiques et historiques sur le Lesotho et son peuple. La correspondance aborde plusieurs questions missiologiques contemporaines au cours de ces 25 ans et demeure une source primaire pour l'histoire de l'Église au Lesotho, en particulier l'Église Catholique.
