En plein xn si'cle, Venise est encore comme une colonie grecque, au point de vue artistique. Mais . Pise, on a conserv' de tr's anciens monuments de peinture qui forment le trait d'union saisissant entre la formule grecque finissante et les premiers b'gaiements de l'expression italienne. Lors qu'on arrive au d'but du xm si'cle, il y a d'j sur divers points de l'italie une activit' picturale consid'rable. Entre autres t'moignages de cette activit', on pourrait dire de cette Renaissance, car c'est du si'cle qu'il faudrait faire dater r'ellement la Renaissance italienne, on citera les fresques du baptist're de Parme, et surtout les oeuvres qui nous ont 't' conserv'es du Pisan Giunta. L''glise de saint-franois d'assise contient de Giunta Pisano (1210-1253) un tr's beau Christ en croix ador' par les anges. Il y a l de ravissantes id'es, toute l'ing'nuit' qui nous charmera dans Fra Angelico, mais encore sans la souplesse et la grandeur du dessin auxquelles deux cents ans ans plus tard arrivera le ma+tre florentin certaines figures d'anges se lamentant ou recueillant le sang des plaies du crucifi' montrent un tel d'sir de dire avec art que le nom de Giunta ne'saurait 'tre pass' sous silence. Quant aux saints et saintes agenouill's de chaque ct' de la croix, ils pr'sentent le m'me caract're, et c'est un grand pas de fait qui profitera a tous ceux qui vont venir.
