Book The Routledge Companion to Local Media and Journalism

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Local Media and Journalism written by Agnes Gulyas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-19 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive edited collection provides key contributions in the field, mapping out fundamental topics and analysing current trends through an international lens. Offering a collection of invited contributions from scholars across the world, the volume is structured in seven parts, each exploring an aspect of local media and journalism. It brings together and consolidates the latest research and theorisations from the field, and provides fresh understandings of local media from a comparative perspective and within a global context. This volume reaches across national, cultural, technological and socio-economic boundaries to bring new understandings to the dominant foci of research in the field and highlights interconnection and thematic links. Addressing the significant changes local media and journalism have undergone in the last decade, the collection explores the history, politics, ethics and contents of local media, as well as delving deeper into the business and practices that affect not only the journalists and media-makers involved, but consumers and communities as well. For students and researchers in the fields of journalism studies, journalism education, cultural studies, and media and communications programmes, this is the comprehensive guide to local media and journalism.

Book Media Moguls

Download or read book Media Moguls written by Michael Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of a few powerful individuals in control of large sections of mass communication industries has coincided with world-wide media de-regulation. In the first book to take a close look at media moguls as a species, Jeremy Tunstall and Michael Palmer show how a handful of own-and-operate entrepreneurs run their empires with a highly eccentric and highly political management style. Individuals such as Berlusconi, Hersant, and Murdoch, in France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the US, are considered in the context of the changing European media industry. The book considers other, non-mogul trends: the emergence of a European media policy and a European-US-Japanese world media industry. Additional case studies focus on Reuters as a news-and-data super-agency and the part played by advertising and other media lobbies in shaping media policy.

Book The Moment of Liberation in Western Europe

Download or read book The Moment of Liberation in Western Europe written by Gerd-Rainer Horn and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Moment of Liberation in Western Europe, 1943-1948, regards the final two years of World War II and the immediate post-liberation period as a moment in twentieth century history, when the shape and contours of postwar Western Europe appeared highly uncertain and various alternatives and conflicting visions were up for grabs. After close to six years of total war, Nazi terror, and brutal occupation policies, a growing number of Europeans were no longer content solely to fight for national liberation from fascist control. Having staked their lives in military and civilian resistance to Nazism and Italian fascism across the continent, surviving activists were aiming to ensure that such a political and social catastrophe would never befall Europe again. In the closing moments of World War II, hundreds of thousands of antifascist activists had begun to identify with the famous quote penned by the exiled German social theorists, Max Horkheimer, who had boldly proclaimed in early September 1939: 'Whoever is not prepared to talk about capitalism should also remain silent about fascism.' The economic and political elites in prewar societies were increasingly regarded as co-responsible for war, fascism, and occupation policies, from which many had benefited significantly and often enthusiastically. There were extensive popular social movements at work in almost every single state which aimed to construct postwar societies in which grassroots democracy and the free association of rank-and-file activists would replace the profit principle and the top-down Jacobin orientation by traditional elites. This study for the first time reconstructs the parameters of this contest over the shape of postwar Western Europe from a consistently transnational perspective.

Book excerpt: Surveys the mass purges of French collaborators at the end of World War II, based on the records of the Free French forces, the courts, and other archives. The purges by the Resistance began even before the liberation and included collaborators at all levels. Members of the fascist Milice and Vichy's Commissariat General aux Questions Juives were charged with national disgrace. Many defendants were accused of denouncing and hunting down Jews. However, some collaborators who played an important role in the roundup and deportation of the French Jews remained immune until the recent activities of Serge Klarsfeld, but none of these have as yet been seriously punished.
