Book excerpt: An extensive and authoritative study that examines the economic, social and political crises of France during the revolution of 1848. Using analysis of original sources and recent research, Fortescue here offers new interpretations of events leading up to and after the second republic was declared. Looking at Louis Philippe's overthrow, the proclamation of manhood suffrage and the unexpected success of the right-wing in the subsequent elections, this book evaluates the political history of France in 1848 and the French political culture of the time. This should be read by all students of nineteenth century history, political scientists and all those with an interest in the historical development of French political culture.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the efforts of nine European intellectuals, including Tocqueville, Flaubert and Marx, to make sense of 1848, Jonathan Beecher casts a fresh and engaging perspective on the experience and impact of the Revolution, and on why, within two generations, a democratic revolution had twice culminated in the dictatorship of a Napoleon.
Download or read book Europe in 1848 written by Dieter Dowe and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events of 1989/90 in Europe demonstrated the renewed relevance of the mid-nineteenth century uprisings: both by showing, once again, how a revolutionary initiative could quickly spread through different European countries, but also by calling into question the nature of revolution and the criteria for a revolution's success and failure. To commemorate the 1848 revolution in a spirit of renewed critical inquiry, an international team of prominent historians have come together to produce what must be the most comprehensive work on this topic to date and to offer a synthesis that sums up the current state of scholarly research, emphasizing the many new interpretations that have developed over several decades.

Download or read book Karl Marx s Theory of Revolution III written by Hal Draper and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third volume of his definitive study of Karl Marx's political thought, Hal Draper examines how Marx, and Marxism, have dealt with the issue of dictatorship in relation to the revolutionary use of force and repression, particularly as this debate has centered on the use of the term "dictatorship of the proletariat." Writing with his usual wit and perception, Draper strips away the layers of misinterpretation and misinformation that have accumulated over the years to show what Marx and Engels themselves really meant by the term.

Download or read book Belgium and the February Revolution written by Brison D. Gooch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adding to the growing body of literature on 1848, this study amplifies the politieal and diplomatie posture of Belgium both before and after the February Revolution. The narrative is based on diplomatie and administrative correspondence, most of it unpublished, and also on the papers of Charles Rogier and Sylvain Van de Weyer, now part of the holdings of Belgium's Archives Generales du Royaume. These materials make possible a more complete account of the Liberal Ministry's first year in offiee, a fuller treatment of the impact of the February Revolution on the Belgian domestie scene, and, for the first time, a detailed tracing of Belgian negotiations with the new Provision al Government and other European powers during the few months just after the fall of Louis Philippe. To my knowledge this is also the first monographie work in English to discuss Belgian problems in 1847 and 1848. * * * * I should like here to record my indebtedness. My greatest obligation is to the Belgian Ameriean Educational Foundation whose support was not only contributory to this study but also led to a major step in my personal intellectual growth. Transportation to Be1gium was once provided by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and typing of the manuscript was the work of Miss Carolyn Embach of the Uni versity of Oklahoma Faculty Research Committee. Among many archivists and librarians who have readily assisted my efforts, par tieular mention must be made of P.-H.
