Book excerpt: Cent cinquante ans d'une histoire riche en rebondissements : cette recherche passionnante retrace l'évolution de l'enseignement de l'allemand en Suisse romande entre 1790 et 1940 et renouvelle l'image d'une discipline scolaire marquée de tenaces idées reçues. Dès la fin du mile siècle, des cours d'allemand sont donnés dans les établissements secondaires des régions francophones, portés par une forte demande populaire. L'adhésion des cantons romands à la Confédération helvétique légitime l'enseignement de cette langue dans les écoles publiques. Pourtant, il en faut davantage pour que l'allemand s'inscrive dans les plans d'études comme une discipline scolaire pleinement reconnue. Il lui faut quitter ses formes archaïques d'apprentissage naturel et privé pour s'aligner sur l'enseignement du latin et du grec, qui ont été rénovés pour correspondre aux besoins des nouveaux collèges et gymnases. Dans cette mutation, la difficulté supposée de la langue allemande s'avère un atout et non un obstacle: celle-ci peut ainsi contribuer à la formation des esprits. Mais à peine l'allemand a-t-il affermi sa place dans le canon des disciplines scolaires, à la fin du me siècle, qu'il lui faut affronter la crise des nationalismes et le rejet du bilinguisme. Ce livre décrit la trajectoire sinueuse de l'allemand scolaire en Suisse romande jusqu'à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en l'inscrivant d'abord dans son contexte institutionnel, politique et culturel, puis en regard du développement de la formation universitaire qualifiant les professeurs chargés de l'enseigner. Enfin la troisième partie est consacrée à l'élaboration des contenus disciplinaires: la pratique orale de la langue, la grammaire et la littérature.
