Download or read book Jan van Eyck written by Craig Harbison and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surviving work of Flemish painter Jan van Eyck (c. 1395–1441) consists of a series of painstakingly detailed oil paintings of astonishing verisimilitude. Most explanations of the meanings behind these paintings have been grounded in a disguised religious symbolism that critics have insisted is foremost. But in Jan van Eyck, Craig Harbison sets aside these explanations and turns instead to the neglected human dimension he finds clearly present in these works. Harbison investigates the personal histories of the true models and participants who sat for such masterpieces as the Virgin and Child and the Arnolfini Double Portrait. This revised and expanded edition includes many illustrations and reveals how van Eyck presented his contemporaries with a more subtle and complex view of the value of appearances as a route to understanding the meaning of life.
Download or read book Narratives of Low Countries History and Culture written by Jane Fenoulhet and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores the ways in which our understanding of the past in Dutch history and culture can be rethought to consider not only how it forms part of the present but how it can relate also to the future. Divided into three parts – The Uses of Myth and History, The Past as Illumination of Cultural Context, and Historiography in Focus – this book seeks to demonstrate the importance of the past by investigating the transmission of culture and its transformations. It reflects on the history of historiography and looks critically at the products of the historiographic process, such as Dutch and Afrikaans literary history. The chapters cover a range of disciplines and approaches: some authors offer a broad view of a particular period, such as Jonathan Israel's contribution on myth and history in the ideological politics of the Dutch Golden Age, while others zoom in on specific genres, texts or historical moments, such as Benjamin Schmidt’s study of the doolhof, a word that today means ‘labyrinth’ but once described a 17th-century educational amusement park. This volume, enlightening and home to multiple paths of enquiry leading in different directions, is an excellent example of what a past-present doolhof might look like.

Download or read book Tyndale s Testament written by Museum Plantin-Moretus and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the era of the early Reformation many influential texts were printed in Antwerp. Not the least of these were the biblical translations of William Tyndale (c. 1494-1536). Despite the relative tolerance of Antwerp's magistrates, which made such pubications possible, Tyndale was eventually seized by officers of Charles V and was executed as a heretic in Vilvoorde, north of Brussels. Tyndale's translations of the New Testament (Worms, 1526; Antwerp, 1534, 1535, 1536) and of the Pentateuch (Antwerp, 1530) were profoundly to shape future English bibles, and through them the language and culture of the English-speaking world. Tyndale's Testament, a volume with contributions by leading international scholars, puts the achievement of Tyndale into its broad cultural and intellectual context, in which Erasmus and Luther were the key figures, and into its immediate commercial and technological location in sixteenth-century Antwerp. It also sketches the transmission of Tyndale's work to future English translations through the Coverdale Bible (Antwerp, 1535), and traces the development of his present-day recognition as the father of modern English Bible translation and of the Anglo-American Evangelical tradition. The volume Tyndale's Testament is to be published to coincide with the Fourth International Tyndale Conference, at the Lessius Hogeschool in Antwerp. It includes the catalogue of a major exhibition to be held (3 September to 1 December 2002) in the UNESCO-listed Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp. The publication is richly illustrated with over a hundred pictures (ten in colour), including a full colour reproduction of the only surviving title page of the first English New Testament in print, from the unique complete copy in the Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart.

Download or read book Rubens written by Peter Paul Rubens and published by Snoeck. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple mission lies at the heart of "Rubens": to give the most complete picture of the great Flemish master as possible. No fewer than 163 paintings, sketches, and drawings by the artist, plus nine tapestries, are put to this worthy task. A faithful, objective understanding of Rubens arises, from his beginnings under the influence of his master Otto Venius and Italian art, right through to the end of his career, when he basked in a major Spanish commission. Rubens is at home in all genres, and all are represented here: from landscapes to portraits, from altarpieces to genre scenes, and historical paintings too, of course. Even the talents of the decorator are revealed in his painted sketches, drawings, and tapestries. For this publication, the master's oeuvre is divided into five groupings: Rubens' Beginnings, Rubens and Italy, The Middle-Class Patron, Official Commissions, and Secular Subject Matter. Through the inclusion of tapestries, particular attention is paid to the genesis of his art. Works such as "Descent from the Cross, Laying in the Sepulchre, The Stoning of Saint Stephen," and three altarpieces created for the city of Lille's churches and convents are included. From this impressive homage to Rubens, the general reader, connoisseur, and historian will all hopefully come to know Rubens better, and also be stimulated by the juxtaposition of works never presented in this way before. Published on the occasion of "Rubens," an exhibition at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille, France.

Their essays present a comprehensive history of the teaching and learning of Arabic in early modern Europe, covering a wide geographical area from southern to northern Europe and discussing the many ways and purposes for which the Arabic language was taught and studied by scholars, theologians, merchants, diplomats and prisoners. The contributions shed light on different methods and contents of language teaching in a variety of academic, scholarly and missionary contexts in the Protestant and the Roman Catholic world. But they also look beyond the institutional history of Arabic studies and consider the importance of alternative ways in which the study of Arabic was persued.
