Book The Structure and Metabolism of the Pancreatic Islets

Download or read book The Structure and Metabolism of the Pancreatic Islets written by S. Falkmer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structure and Metabolism of the Pancreatic Islets: A Centennial of Paul Langerhans' Discovery is a collection of that presents the advancement in the field of pancreatic islet research, particularly in the area of biosynthesis and secretion of insulin. The title also serves as a commemorative material to Paul Langerhans' work. The text first covers the differentiation and growth of the endocrine pancreas, and then proceeds to tackling a- and ß-cells. Next, the selection deals with the glucose metabolism of the pancreatic islets. The text also discusses the biosynthesis and storage of insulin, along with insulin release. The seventh part details pancreatic islets and diabetes. The book will be of great use to students, researchers, and practitioners of medicine.

Book Color Atlas of Human Fetal and Neonatal Histology

Download or read book Color Atlas of Human Fetal and Neonatal Histology written by Linda M. Ernst and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-31 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology was an important step in updating the histology texts available to practicing pathologists and pathology trainees who perform fetal autopsy and/or participate in research involving fetal tissues. It was a well-received volume that filled a major gap in pathology references related to normal histology and provided a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of fetal and neonatal histology. While the basics of fetal histology have changed little in the intervening years since publication of the first edition, this successor edition provides new insights and a fresh perspective. This book contains six new chapters including: blood vessels and lymphatics, external genitalia, eye, ear, skin, and maceration changes. Many existing chapters have also been expanded to address a greater breadth of fetal and neonatal histology such as postnatal testis development and the cardiac conduction system. The “Special Considerations” sections were also expanded in many chapters to address particularly problematic issues within individual organ systems. The book reviews the histology of the major organ systems in the fetus and neonate and provides detailed images, up-to-date references, and practical guidelines for identifying tissues across all gestational ages of development. The second edition of Color Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Histology serves as the ultimate go-to resource for pathologists and researchers dealing with, and interested in, fetal and neonatal histology. It provides a comprehensive summary of the current status of the field with excellent and extensive illustrative examples that help guide the clinical study of fetal and neonatal histology and stimulate investigative efforts with fetal tissue.

Book The Exocrine Pancreas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Pandol
  • Publisher : Morgan & Claypool Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 1615041389
  • Pages : 66 pages

Download or read book The Exocrine Pancreas written by Stephen Pandol and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secretions of the exocrine pancreas provide for digestion of a meal into components that are then available for processing and absorption by the intestinal epithelium. Without the exocrine pancreas, malabsorption and malnutrition result. This chapter describes the cellular participants responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and fluid that in combination provide a pancreatic secretion that accomplishes the digestive functions of the gland. Key cellular participants, the acinar cell and the duct cell, are responsible for digestive enzyme and fluid secretion, respectively, of the exocrine pancreas. This chapter describes the neurohumoral pathways that mediate the pancreatic response to a meal as well as details of the cellular mechanisms that are necessary for the organ responses, including protein synthesis and transport and ion transports, and the regulation of these responses by intracellular signaling systems. Examples of pancreatic diseases resulting from dysfunction in cellular mechanisms provide emphasis of the importance of the normal physiologic mechanisms.

Book Molecular Basis of Pancreas Development and Function

Download or read book Molecular Basis of Pancreas Development and Function written by Joel F. Habener and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes mellitus is rapidly increasing in prevalence throughout both developed and developing countries. The social and economic burden of this disease is estimated to cost 14 billion dollars worldwide. In the USA alone, 15 million individuals are diabetic, nearly half of them unaware of their condition. Complications of diabetes mellitus are the leading causes for blindness, limb amputation and chronic renal failure and kidney transplantation in industrialized countries. Further, diabetes mellitus per se and the metabolic derangement associated with diabetes are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Diabetes, as defined by an elevated fasting blood glucose level is presently subdivided in etiologically distinct groups. The most prevalent being type 2 (adult onset) diabetes characterized by insulin resistance and failure of the ~-cell to supply insulin in amounts sufficient to meet the body's needs. Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes, most commonly with an onset during childhood and adolescence, is caused by an auto-immune destruction of the pancreatic ~-cells. The causations of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes involve a combination of complex genetic traits and environmental influences. A third category are the mature onset diabetes of the young (MODY). This comparatively small group of patients (-10% of diabetes) presents relative early in life «30 years of age) compared to the more common late onset type 2 diabetes.
