Book Hist ria da filosofia natural

Download or read book Hist ria da filosofia natural written by Edward Grant and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Primates in History Myth Art and Science

Download or read book Primates in History Myth Art and Science written by Cecilia Veracini and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-human primates (hereafter just primates) play a special role in human societies, especially in regions where modern humans and primates co-exist. Primates feature in myths and legends and in traditional indigenous knowledge. Explorers observed them in the wild and brought them, at great cost, to Europe. There they were valued as pets and for display, their images featured in art and architecture, and where they were literally teased apart by scientists. The international team of contributors to this book draws these different perspectives together to show how primates helped humans better understand their own place in nature. The book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well scholars in disciplines ranging from anthropology to art history. Key features: Includes contributions from an international team of historians and natural scientists Integrates various perspectives and perceptions of non-human primates across time and place Summarizes the place of non-human primates in science, art and culture Includes rare early illustrations

Book Toward an Intercultural Natural History of Brazil

Download or read book Toward an Intercultural Natural History of Brazil written by Mariana Françozo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the first extensive census of the surviving copies of the treatise Historia Naturalis Brasiliae in libraries worldwide and examines the book from a variety of interdisciplinary viewpoints. The chapters in this volume are written by scholars from different fields of knowledge, including anthropology, botany, linguistics, literature, book history, medieval and early modern history, and art history. The chapters contextualize the treatise vis-à-vis its predecessors and contemporaneous works of natural history and examine its botanical, zoological, and linguistic accuracy and usefulness in the present day. Put together, the seven chapters of this volume present a kaleidoscope of possibilities of how to re-interpret Piso and Marcgraf’s work within the dynamic context of knowledge-production about the ‘New’ World in the early modern era, while also suggesting approaches to continue profiting from its subject matter in the present day. Toward an Intercultural Natural History of Brazil offers essential reading on the Historia Naturalis Brasiliae, natural history and Latin American history. Book Experiment and Natural Philosophy in Seventeenth Century Tuscany

Download or read book Experiment and Natural Philosophy in Seventeenth Century Tuscany written by Luciano Boschiero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work counters historiographies that search for the origins of modern science within the experimental practices of Europe’s first scientific institutions, such as the Cimento. It proposes that we should look beyond the experimental rhetoric found in published works, to find that the Cimento academicians were participants in a culture of natural philosophical theorising that existed throughout Europe.

Book Nature Enlightenment and University Reforms in the Iberian Peninsula A Comparative Analysis of the Universities of Salamanca and Coimbra 1766 1820

Download or read book Nature Enlightenment and University Reforms in the Iberian Peninsula A Comparative Analysis of the Universities of Salamanca and Coimbra 1766 1820 written by and published by Dykinson. This book was released on with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The university reforms that took place in Europe throughout the 18th century were an important moment of change in the history of these institutions. In the Iberian Peninsula, this wave of reforms left its mark in Coimbra and Salamanca (later reaching the other Spanish universities). Portugal and Spain were no strangers to the motivations and even to the general lines of this wave of reforms. Inseparable from the ideas of the Enlightenment, and with a clear will to combat the backwardness and decadence of these institutions, rather ambitious projects emerged, albeit in different degrees. Coimbra faced a rather disruptive initial situation while in Salamanca later plans (1807, for example) proved to be quite ambitious as well. All having a mandatory nature, it would not be correct to say that these Universities did not participate in these processes of reform. Individually or on behalf of collective bodies, several initiatives and proposals emerged during this period in both Universities. In addition, the participation of professors in the statutes and plans that were launched since 1771 is recurrent. Beyond this aspect, it will not be forced to state that the curricular aspect was the most significant mark of these reforms. Thus, we chose to study in a comparative way subjects that sought to explain the concept of nature and its products. With the clear objective of preparing a body of technicians capable of providing a rational and effective exploitation of the various natural products, the faculties of mathematics and philosophy emerged. In the case of medicine, natural products were essential to produce medicines and in this sense the reform of this knowledge brought, among other changes, matters linked to pharmaceutical studies. In the area of law, a relevant introduction was natural law. The perception of natural law was not similar in both countries, and an evident consequence was the greater instability of this chair in Salamanca. Inseparable from the curricular aspects was the adoption of foreign compendia and the encouragement given to the teachers to write their own textbooks. The adoption of textbooks was quite similar, and clearly shows us the lines that reformers sought to follow to modernize these university institutions.

This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
