Book History of Our Country

Download or read book History of Our Country written by Oscar H. Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Our Country: A d104-Book for Schools This "History of Our Country" has been prepared in the belief that there is need of a text-book on the history of the United States which would present fairly and impartially all sections of the Union. The authors have endeavored to divest the narrative of all bias for or against the North or the South, the East or the West. The strife for sectional or partisan supremacy has often transcended the bounds of true patriotism, but it is believed that such strife has been inevitable, and that in the long run it has made our country stronger and richer in the nobler elements of national life. Love of country is greater than the love of party, and loyalty to the state is a permanent and indestructible element in loyalty to the nation. Our country is "an indestructible union of indestructible states." Our history should be so taught that the next generation will cherish the patriotism which conserves the rights of the states, and honor the patriotism which guards the supremacy of the Federal Union. If this book shall prove to be helpful to the great army of earnest and faithful teachers in making the story of our country's life, growth, and progress more real and interesting to their pupils, the hope of the authors will be amply fulfilled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book might almost be entitled Canadians in the Attic. Canada is the United States' forgotten twin, the country that resembles the United States more than any other, and that shares a history with America that goes back to the seventeenth century, and that includes the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the anti-slavery movement, to name only a few. Canada is in a way a measure of, a barometer of, American exceptionalism. What happens in Canada is often a reflection of what has happened in the United States, but by the same token, what happens in Canada is often a sign of what could happen in its American neighbor. While the two countries have distinct political systems, and particular histories, ideologically they are closer together than standard Canadian histories suggest. (Canadians are left out of standard American histories.) Arguably, Canada is the part of North America where the New Deal came to fruition in the 1960s, when it was frustrated in the United States. But no American political idea fails to penetrate Canada, and in the 2000s many Canadians, including the current Canadian government, seek to imitate or replicate the hard-right turn in American politics. From whatever direction, the Canadian experience illuminates American experience-- and vice-versa"--

Book excerpt: • A New Republic Best Book of the Year • The Globalist Top Books of the Year • Winner of the Maine Literary Award for Non-fiction Particularly relevant in understanding who voted for who during presidential elections, this is an endlessly fascinating look at American regionalism and the eleven “nations” that continue to shape North America According to award-winning journalist and historian Colin Woodard, North America is made up of eleven distinct nations, each with its own unique historical roots. In American Nations he takes readers on a journey through the history of our fractured continent, offering a revolutionary and revelatory take on American identity, and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and continue to mold our future. From the Deep South to the Far West, to Yankeedom to El Norte, Woodard (author of American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common Good) reveals how each region continues to uphold its distinguishing ideals and identities today, with results that can be seen in the composition of the U.S. Congress or on the county-by-county election maps of any hotly contested election in our history.
