In this book, Charles Ramírez Berg develops an innovative theory of stereotyping that accounts for the persistence of such images in U.S. popular culture. He also explores how Latino actors and filmmakers have actively subverted and resisted such stereotyping. In the first part of the book, Berg sets forth his theory of stereotyping, defines the classic stereotypes, and investigates how actors such as Raúl Julia, Rosie Pérez, José Ferrer, Lupe Vélez, and Gilbert Roland have subverted stereotypical roles. Their presentation in 20th century mainstream cinema is not just decisive for the image that consumers have about the Latino culture, but has also been decisive for the obstacles towards an Hispanic establishment in Hollywood.

For example, in 1952 a U.S. audience seeing "High ""Noon"" "would have watched as the lawman "Will Kane," Gary Cooper, stood alone and defended a town of righteous cowards as a matter of principle. They might have connected the scenario with the struggle against McCarthyism (1950-1954) that was ongoing. In contrast, the majority of Latin American viewers unfamiliar with McCarthyism might simply have seen the film on a "mythic" level as a struggle between good and evil. But Latin American audiences would have also noticed the first time a Mexican woman, "Helen Ramirez," played by Katy Jurado, was on equal or superior moral footing with the white woman "Amy Fowler," Grace Kelly. In the film it was Helen who gave Amy a lesson on how to stand by her man Kane. Films about Latino life, argue authors Chad Tew and John Marambio, reveal symptoms of the crisis behind the ongoing national debate about immigration in the United States. The idea of 'Paradise' is the primary meta-narrative used to construct the United States in Hollywood films. In Clash in Paradise," the authors show how these films simultaneously contain conflicting narratives about human movement across borders and the struggle over who has the right to live in paradise. These conflicting narratives within Hollywood films result in a sense of confusion and misunderstanding that runs between both communities. The authors conceptualize how communication between ethnic and cultural communities can be achieved through movies and other popular culture media, such as crossover Latino music, and the reasons why sometimes communities fail to understand the others' point of view. Clash in Paradise provides a timely and incisive overview of the myriad ways in which portrayals of Latino life in Hollywood films impact upon the realities of life in the US for immigrants.
