Book Nietzsche s Epic of the Soul

Download or read book Nietzsche s Epic of the Soul written by T. K. Seung and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thus Spoke Zarathustra is Nietzsche's most problematic text. There appears to be no thematic connection between its four Parts and numerous sections. To make it even worse, the book contains a number of thematic contradictions. The standard approach has been a method of selective reading, that is, most critics select a few brilliant passages for edification and ignore the rest. This approach has turned Nietzsche's text into a collection of disjointed fragments. Going against this prevalent approach, T.K. Seung presents the first unified reading of the whole book. He reads it as the record of Zarathustra's epic journey to find spiritual values in the secular world. The alleged thematic contradictions of the text are shown to indicate the turns and twists that are dictated by the hero's epic battle against his formidable opponent. His heroic struggle is eventually resolved by the power of a pantheistic nature-religion. Thus Nietzsche's ostensibly atheistic work turns out to be a highly religious text. The author uncovers this epic plot by reading Nietzsche's text as a baffling series of riddles and puzzles. Hence his reading is not only edifying but also breathtaking. In this unprecedented enterprise, the author takes a complex interdisciplinary approach, engaging the five disciplines of philosophy, psychology, religious studies, literary analysis, and cultural history.

Now!" —Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author I Needed to Win. They Needed to Die. Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class—and the nobles who destroyed their home. When Sal steals a flyer for an audition to become a member of The Left Hand—the Queen's personal assassins, named after the rings she wears—Sal jumps at the chance to infiltrate the court and get revenge. But the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. And as Sal succeeds in the competition, and wins the heart of Elise, an intriguing scribe at court, they start to dream of a new life and a different future, but one that Sal can have only if they survive. Book Revenge and Social Conflict

Download or read book Revenge and Social Conflict written by Kit R. Christensen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revenge has been a subject of concern in most intellectual traditions throughout history, and even when social norms regard it as permissible or even obligatory, it is commonly recognised as being more counterproductive than beneficial. In this book, Kit R. Christensen explores this provocative issue, offering an in-depth account of both the nature of revenge and the causes and consequences of the desire for this kind of retaliatory violence. He then develops a version of eudaimonistic consequentialism to argue that vengeance is never morally justified, and applies this to cases of intergroup violence where the lust for revenge against a vilified 'Them' is easily incited and often exploited. His study will interest a wide range of readers in moral philosophy as well as social philosophers, legal theorists, and social/behavioural scientists.

Book Retribution A Revenge Procedural Suspense

Download or read book Retribution A Revenge Procedural Suspense written by A.J. Scudiere and published by Griffyn Ink. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sin and Lee are back! – Readers say it’s “even better than the first, which I could not put down!” Sin and Lee have left their violent pasts behind, but the past will never leave them. They’ve tried to lay low. Sin and Lee have whole new identities as Will and Diana Kincaid. Will/Lee is supposedly a mild-mannered accountant, and Diana/Sin is now … a police officer. When the body of mafia leader Kolya Kurev’s son turns up in her district, Diana is forced to take a hard look at how well she has—or hasn’t—covered her tracks. A stronger generation of Kurevs is growing out of the wasteland she and Lee left behind and the Kurev sons have a memory that is long and angry. Her precinct is concerned about the growing threat of the Kurev family and more than a little curious what brought it to them. But was it Sin? Or was it her new boss, Nick Stelian? He specifically recruited her to his department and now she’s having to ask herself why. It’s hard to choose sides when Diana can’t even determine what the sides are anymore. She can’t run, she can’t stay, and she can’t protect what she fought so hard for, not when a newer, more dangerous breed of assassin waits around every corner… Retribution is the second book in the Vendetta Trifecta by USA Today bestselling author A.J. Scudiere. While it can be read as a standalone, you’ll want the whole series before you even finish.

Book Revenge and Reconciliation

Download or read book Revenge and Reconciliation written by Rajmohan Gandhi and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2000-10-14 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original, provocative and compelling reading of the subcontinent’s history In this remarkable study, well-known biographer Rajmohan Gandhi, underscoring the prominence in the Mahabharata of the revenge impulse, follows its trajectory in South Asian history. Side by side, he traces the role played by reconcilers up to present times, like the Buddha, Mahavira and Asoka. Encompassing myth and historical fact, the author moves from the circumstances of Drona’s death and Parasurama’s slaying of the Kshatriyas to the burst of Islam in India and Akbar’s success in gaining acceptance for it, the executions of Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Tegh Bahadur, and Shivaji’s achievement of self-rule. His explanation of the 1947 division of India identifies the role of the 1857 Rebellion in shaping Gandhi’s thinking and strategy, and reflects on the wounds of Partition. The survey of post-Independence India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka also touches upon the tragic bereavements of six of their women leaders. Incisive and finely argued, Revenge and Reconciliation compels us to confront historical and contemporary realities of intolerance, while pointing to possible strategies of mutual accommodation in India and the rest of South Asia at the threshold of the twenty-first century.

Download or read book The Sacrament of Desire written by Alex D. Suderman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the political-theological implications of sacramental desire in Fyodor Dostoevsky`s The Brothers Karamazov with Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra in critical dialogue with Henri de Lubac. Suderman demonstrates how the work of de Lubac, Dostoevsky, and Nietzsche address a transcendent desire for a higher social and political unity in late-modern Western cultures and the imperialistic and coercive tendencies latent within it, concretely expressed in the Western church and the modern state. Specifically, this book investigates how Dostoevsky and Nietzsche envision new forms of political embodiment that are neither escapist nor imperialist. Through a detailed examination of Zarathustra's dramatic discovery of the eternal return and Alyosha's mystical experience of the resurrection, Suderman demonstrates the metaphysical significance of their respective political ethics. While the intent of de Lubac is to recover the social implications of the sacraments of Roman Catholicism, Nietzsche and Dostoevsky espouse alternative articulations of community and the sacramental desire necessary for such embodiment, a desire rooted in their respective perceptions of God.

Book The Politics of Truth and Reconciliation in South Africa

Download or read book The Politics of Truth and Reconciliation in South Africa written by Richard Wilson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was set up to deal with the human rights violations of apartheid during the years 1960-1994. However, as Wilson shows, the TRC's restorative justice approach to healing the nation did not always serve the needs of communities at a local level. Based on extended anthropological fieldwork, this book illustrates the impact of the TRC in urban African communities in Johannesburg. While a religious constituency largely embraced the commission's religious-redemptive language of reconciliation, Wilson argues that the TRC had little effect on popular ideas of justice as retribution. This provocative study deepens our understanding of post-apartheid South Africa and the use of human rights discourse. It ends on a call for more cautious and realistic expectations about what human rights institutions can achieve in democratizing countries.
